"[We need to] stop treating the symptoms. The symptoms are a messenger of a deeper problem. Let’s get to the deeper problem.”

A very interesting article about depression, anxiety and medication (via Vita House Family Centre.)

"If you are depressed and anxious, you are not a machine with malfunctioning parts. You are a human being with unmet needs."

A long read, but really interesting, and well worth your time.

It's important to note that every case is different, and some psychological illnesses do require medical intervention, but depression and anxiety may not necessarily fall into that category.

I didn’t have a ‘drink problem’, but I had a problem with the way I was drinking

This week is Awareness Week for Alcohol Related Harm, the theme of which is Alcohol and Cancer. In addition to the many negative physiological impacts of regular imbibing, there exists a myriad of social, emotional, relational and psychological problems as a consequence of how we drink. This article by Jennifer O'Connell really resonates with me, particularly the line, "I'd been comforting myself with the fact that I wasn't, really, by Irish standards, a 'drinker'..." https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/i-didn-t-have-a-drink-problem-but-i-had-a-problem-with-the-way-i-was-drinking-1.1416905

It’s good to talk – if you’re getting older and fearing the worst

You're never too "old" or too "set in your ways" to find comfort in talking. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/oct/30/talk-fearing-worst-age-uk-over-55-mental-health-problems-treatments-facilities
