It is so important to replace your timing belt on time, even if you don't see damage on the outside of the belt. The inside of the belt could be dry, making it more likely to snap unexpectedly. Not only will a snapped belt leave you stranded, but it can bend valves, cause piston damage, and ruin cylinder heads.

We're about to roll out this beautiful Kawasaki ZZ41400 on Michelin Road 6.

Michelin say the new tyre benefits from a fresh tread design, improved raw materials and an improved build, which all contribute to a claimed 15% improvement in wet grip over the old model, as well as a claimed 10% increase in tyre life.

The Road 6 is available now in six front and eight rear sizes, while the Road 6 GT comes in one front and three rear sizes covering everything from sub-500cc machines right through to 1600cc heavyweights.

Prices vary depending on size, but expect to pay around €350 a pair.

Before your test, ask us to check the following parts from the latest information on the NCT website which might help because they've recorded the five most common problems people experience when testing their car.

The main failures were:

Front suspension - worn or broken parts
Tyre condition - bald or damaged
Headlamp focus - too high or too low
Brake line/hoses - rusted or perished - older cars
Stop lamps - blown bulbs or wrong colour (white or orange)

Failed the test?
The NCT is what it is. It is not 100% accurate or consistent in every one of its branches. And now the testers/mechanics don't even explain why your car failed. A car failing can be very stressful and irritating to many drivers. but if you don't have a valid NCT disc in your car, then you are driving illegally on Irish roads with probably no insurance cover to rub salt in the wounds. Finally the dilemma?
As Shakespeare asked " TO SERVICE BEFORE A TEST OR AFTER A TEST - that is the question?"

If your car is older, the NCT can often uncover things that you didn't know were a problem. If it isn't too long to the NCT, I personally would wait until the NCT and then get a retest if it fails because 9 times out of 10 this works out as a cheaper option rather than getting a service then having to go back to a garage and get more work done at a later stage if the NCT uncovers anything and another retest fee. At least by having the NCT first you can get the car serviced and also get any faults identified by the test repaired in one go and know if anything might have just passed and then replace them later in the year.

However, if your NCT is a long time away and your car is due or overdue a service, I would get the annual service done first. You could end up causing more damage and create some new problems which could cost you a lot more to put right.
