Hey guys,

I'm looking to get the Irish University Canoe Polo League started again for next semester.

The 2016 League will be an unofficial competition acting as a trial run for future competitions. I have been in contact with the previous organizers of the competition who have given their input in regards to how the league used to be run.

This years league will be run on the basis of Eastern Universities being pooled against one another and the same being done for the Western Universities. This is done purely because of the huge cost of having to travel just to play a single match of polo.

The top two teams from East/West then play one another for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. The league will have a Div A, B, Alumni, and also a Female only Division if there is enough interest.

For the Western Unis there will be a weekend organized to compete against one another most likely in Limerick pending the rental of floating goals. The reasoning behind this being Limerick is a halfway point between Galway and Cork.

Could each college interested in competing please nominate a reliable individual for me to liaise with. I will finalize details with these individuals in to regards cost and the running format of the League.

Finally I would ask you to share this post to make sure it gets maximum exposure. Please email me at [email protected] or send this page a message if you have any queries.

Regards,
Sam O'Connor

Important news for all people interested/involved in polo:

Our AGM took place in October, however, 2 members attended and we did not reach a quorum. A notice was issued informing the members of the implications of dissolving the committee and an EGM was called. No members attended the EGM. A meeting was held Monday 6th January and a small number of volunteers have agreed to continue the work of NCPC in order that the sport has a chance to continue.

Canoeing Ireland have informed me that we are operating outside of our remit and unless a committee is ratified by an EGM they will recall all equipment, freeze our account and be unable to provide insurance for any canoe polo events.

The upcoming competition proposed for the Curragh on 24th and 25th January cannot go ahead if a committee is not in place.

Winter leagues such as Galway, Limerick and Dublin League are not covered by Canoeing Ireland Insurance

Six major outdoor competitions will not go ahead at locations in Galway, Longford, Killaloe, Enniskillen and Phibsborough, as NCPC are responsible for signing off the risk assessments and application forms to Waterways Ireland and the insurance company.

Boats currently on loan to developing clubs will be recalled and put into storage. Equipment such as goals and pitch lines etc will also be put into storage

The Junior Development Programme aimed at juniors aged between 13 and 21 years old and leading to National Squad Development will cease.

The Coaching scheme will not be implemented.

No national squads will train or compete at international level.

The effect on our sport will be detrimental and cannot survive without a concerted effort by all involved in the sport to come to the EGM to vote and or put themselves forward for election.

Volunteers are always welcome to lend a helping hand, however, in the interest of fairness to those who have agreed to stay on, we need to fill all vacancies on the committee to spread the workload and develop our sport in a meaningful manner.

Judging by the lack of attendance, NCPC are obviously not meeting the needs of the membership but without your input we can't put this right. If you have any suggestions as to what you feel the NCPC should be doing please let us know.

Again, it is important that all positions are filled, so we need more people to put themselves forward for election. The roles are varied including competitions, referee, squad liaison, equipment, development, junior development, PR.

The EGM will take place in The Liffey Training Centre, Strawberry Beds on Saturday 17th January 2015 at 1.30pm.

The positions up for election are:

Chairperson (2 year term)

Treasurer (2 year term)

Ordinary member 1 (2 year term)

Ordinary member 2 (2 year term)

Ordinary member 3 (1 year term)

Ordinary member 4 (1 year term)
