Your weekly fun fix of all things creative THIS IS ART CLUB! is back for a new season starting this Thursday 5pm on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player.

Over the next eight weeks we'll be exploring different sources of inspiration.

First up, it’s THE FACE! with a special report from Adam at The Model, Sligo where he catches up with painter Mick O'Dea RHA to find out what makes a good portrait, we meet photographer Mark Duffy at Photo Museum Ireland and students from Marino College take inspiration from the wonders of ‘The Dead Zoo’

In our art club studio at NCAD we'll be collaging portraits with Ross Carvil, making hybrid animal masks with plaster of paris, creating cardboard cubist sculptures and having food based fun with some Muniz inspired pop art portraits.

You can find loads of downloadable resources, visual culture and bonus material on our website rte.ie/thisisart and remember, if there's a young artist in your life - Ireland's most exciting young people's art competition - THIS IS ART! 2023 is back again and now open for entries. We're over on insta at .ie and would love you to follow along over the next few weeks and help spread the word.

Tune in to RTÉ2 at 21:20 TONIGHT to watch the last of our , on the iconic Pigeon House!

The largest protected structure in Ireland, the vast ruin of the former Pigeon House Power Station is one of the most striking complexes in the city. Charles Duggan, Heritage Officer and Lenzie O'Sullivan, Senior Architect at Dublin City Council take us through the use and historical significance of the striking structure, which opened in 1902 and was decommissioned in 1976.

Designed by engineers, its interior was functional, with an exterior that brandished the brick design techniques of its time. The layers of exposed fabric show how the building was constantly modified to keep up with increasing electricity demand. The building now holds a different kind of power, one of great cultural and social potential.

This Site Specific series of short films was commissioned by for 2021 & produced by Dyehouse Films. Pigeon House is directed by Bonnie Dempsey.

The series was made possible by the support of The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Dublin City Council, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, OPW - Office of Public Works, BAM Ireland, Dublin Port Company, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and further sponsors. Thank you!

Tonight at 21:20h, tune in to RTÉ2 to watch "Cathal Brugha", one of the film

A marriage of architecture and art with an underlining social comment about the role of women in society, this is a contemporary look at the College of Domestic Economy designed by Robinson and Keefe in 1939. Established to further the education of women, this college was located on Cathal Brugha Street. Conservation architect Mary McDonald takes us on a descriptive tour of one of the capital’s wonderfully preserved examples of art deco architecture. Art historian Paula Murphy talks to us about renowned sculptor Gabriel Hayes and her striking Three Graces figurative sculpture that represents Sweeping, Cooking and Sewing – at the time deemed appropriate studies for women.

THE FOUR COURTS

A unique account of the conservation and restoration work on Dublin’s iconic Four Courts dome with insightful contributions from Graham Hickey, Dublin Civic Trust along with Terri Sweeney Meade & Audrey Farrell, Conservation Architects, OPW - Office of Public Works

The Four Courts is an iconic building begun by Thomas Cooley in 1776 and then taken over by James Gandon following Cooley’s death. The documentary speaks about the building as a ‘survivor and witness’ to the social and political upheaval of our capital city over 200 years, and reveals recent behind-the-scenes restoration by the OPW expert team.

This short doc was commissioned by Irish Architecture Foundation for Dublin 2021

Hope you enjoy!

Looking for more on the telly? The 6 short produced for 2021 by Dyehouse Films are airing on RTÉ2 on Wednesdays at 21:20 or so, starting tonight with "Iveagh Market"!

The Iveagh Market was designed and built by Frederick G. Hicks in 1906 and was in active use for most of the 20th century. In this rare insight into the Liberties iconic indoor market, we see the unsettling scenes of a dilapidated interior allowed to decay for twenty years. It seems impossible to imagine how it could be brought back into use. We hear from Lord Iveagh, who recounts how the market came to be, and former traders Rita Ryan and Imelda Patel (née Lahiff) describe with affection the meaning and significance of the market to the local community. Councillor Tina McVeigh talks about the restoration of the building, the commitment from Lord Iveagh, and the call to action by the community to bring the building, once the social and commercial heart of the Liberties, back to its former glory.

Director Bonnie Dempsey, Producer Aimie Gavin, Director of Photography Tom Comerford, Camera (UK) Paul Curran, Director (UK) Georgina Burrell, Additional Camera Ror Conaty, Drone Photography Martin Osborne, Blaine Rennicks, Ror Conaty, Sound Recordist Susan Downey, Rerecording Mixer Nikki Moss, Editor Mike Foott, Executive Producer David O’Sullivan.

We were delighted to be asked to help tell the story of The Tenters / Fairbrothers Fields by the Conservation team at DCC for its centenary year.

Tonight at 7pm, RTÉ Nationwide will share the film with a wider audience.

Implementation of this tenant purchase scheme in a time of turmoil was remarkable. The Tenters housing scheme proves how generous design stands the test of time and can teach us so much about how to build strong communities.
