Wicklow healthy kids
Share tips, recipes, advice on healthy eating for kids. We all know they SHOULD eat healthy but HOW do we get them to eat healthy......
The idea for this page was set up after i attended a talk that counsellor Pat Kavangh organised with the chef from the Mystic Celt in Wicklow Paul Smith about healthy eating and getting kids to eat the food we put infront of them. Its not a page to preach or to give endless long information on nutrition , but just to give advice to each other. I have a chef and a teacher with a special interest in nutrition on the admin so hopefully it will be a great place to be

Food is grown in different ways all around the world.
Task the children to find out how different food is produced around the world. Allocate the food below to pairs or small groups of children to research:
Watercress
Rice
Sugar
Watermelon
Lemons
The amount of a nutrient or fibre provided by food or drinks depends on the serving size consumed.
Discuss with the children that the amount of a nutrient provided by a portion of food (or drink) depends on the serving size. Display a selection of food packaging around the room. Ensure the nutrition labels on the packaging provide the nutrients both per 100g and per serving. Here are some ideas for packaged foods to display:
Whole-grain cereal
Loaf of bread
Can of tuna
Can of beans
Can of chickpeas
Tub of spread
Tub of butter
Bottle of oil (plastic)
Bag of carrots
Bag of lettuce
Packet of tomatoes
Task the children to look at the food labels to examine the Nutrients and portion size. Before they start, explain that they will look at total fat and total carbohydrate on the labels so they can ignore the ‘of which saturate’ and ‘of which sugars’ under the fat and carbohydrate information.
When the children have finished, talk about the differences they notice between the amounts of various nutrients per 100g and per serving.
Summarise that the amount of food eaten will affect the amount of a nutrient provided. To get the range of nutrients needed by the body, we are all encouraged to eat a variety of food from different food groups – a healthy diet.
Will be a great family day out.

Make your own cheese.
Warm 500ml whole milk and add the juice of 1 lemon – as you stir you’ll see lumps form (the ‘curd’).
Do not boil!
Remove from the heat and leave for 5-10 minutes. Strain the milk through a clean cloth, in a sieve/colander, over a bowl.
Wrap the cloth over the ‘cheese’ and gently press to remove the liquid (whey).
If you like, add other flavours such as herbs and spices.
Pop the cheese in the fridge until you are ready to enjoy it.
