We Need More of This! – “New York City sues social media platforms over youth mental health crisis”

In the lawsuit against TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube, the city of New York said the platforms are responsible for an uptick in mental health issues among young people, including depression and su***de ideation. These issues, the lawsuit states, impose a “large burden on cities, school districts and public hospital systems that provide mental health services to youth.”

In today's interconnected world, our students are not just learners but global digital citizens navigating the vast online landscape. Empowering them with digital literacy is essential, ensuring they embrace and enjoy their online experience responsibly. Education must extend beyond traditional subjects, fostering critical thinking and ethical decision-making in the digital realm. By equipping students with the skills to discern reliable information, practice online etiquette, and safeguard their digital footprint, we prepare them for a future where responsible global citizenship is as important online as it is offline. In nurturing these competencies, we cultivate informed, empathetic, and empowered individuals ready to thrive in the digital age.

What a day Stanford University. I also had the pleasure of meeting and attending a talk by the Chair of Computer Science at Stanford University, Professor Mehran Sahami, a gentleman and then had time at the campus.

The Stanford campus is located on 8,180 acres in the centre of the San Francisco Peninsula (approximately twice the size of Wexford Town). 24,916 employees. Stanford University has 16,605 full-time and 1,075 part-time students. This university has produced so many famous graduates. What a day!

Cyberbullying 31/08/2022

Cyberbullying is an area within the Primary and Post-Primary sectors that needs to be continuously addressed through education. We must understand that children now and forever more are digital citizens, some interacting with their peers in their digital domain equally to their physical world.

Protect yourself and your family!

Within 12 months, An Garda Síochána have commenced 28 prosecutions concerning a new law criminalising the sharing of intimate images online without the subjects' consent.

This law also covers:
Communications.
Harassment.
Stalking.
Prohibited messages

Coco's Law (Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Act 2020) is alive and well. Well done to Jackie Fox and Brendan Howlin.

We all need to be educated about this law. To understand we have protection and to ensure you do not break it. This law will prosecute adults and children alike.

All schools within the primary and post-primary sectors should now have Digital Safety Programmes embedded within the curriculum.

If your child's school does not have a Digital Safety Programme, you need to demand this for your child.
