⚗️🔬Coláiste Abbáin is heading to the big smoke for the BT Young Scientist Competition 🔬⚗️
Fiach Weber O’Cianain has successfully qualified for the finals of the upcoming 2025 BT Young Scientist Competition. It is a significant accomplishment to be one of the 550 selected projects, as there were over 2060 applications for BTYSTE2025. He is completing ‘’An Assessment of the Ecology of Tacumshin Lake and wetlands.’’ In this project, Fiach will investigate the health of the ecosystem of Tacumshin lake and wetlands, including the impacts of human activity e.g. pollution (lead and nitrates) and distirbance. He will travel to Dublin to present his research to the Judges in January at the final exhibition. A huge well done to Fiach and his Biology teacher Mr. Conroy on this great achievement.

In this issue, we are proud to showcase individuals and groups who are making a significant impact on their communities and beyond, demonstrating the strength and unity.
Boo Murphy’s remarkable achievement as the U15 World Handball Champion is a testament to her extraordinary resilience, innate talent, and unwavering dedication. Overcoming personal tragedy and navigating the societal challenges often faced by Travellers, Boo has emerged as a beacon of pride, not just for her local community, but for the wider Traveller community as well. Her journey is a story of hope and triumph, reminding us all of the power of sport to bring communities together and uplift individuals.
The Coolmine Therapeutic Community’s Pact team, under the leadership of Annette McKenna, is making a profound impact on the lives of Traveller women living in private emergency accommodation in Dublin. Addressing critical issues such as addiction, housing instability, and mental health, the Pact team employs a culturally sensitive approach that is instrumental in building trust within this marginalised community.
In this issue, we take a closer look at the insidious nature of stigma and its lasting effects on the Traveller community, particularly in the areas of education, employment, and mental health. Stigma, both external and internalised, remains a significant barrier to progress, but addressing it head-on is the first step in breaking cycles of marginalisation. By shining a light on this issue, we hope to foster greater understanding and open up conversations that lead to real change.
Since its founding in 1992, the Cork Traveller Visibility Group (CTVG) has played a pivotal role in advocating for and supporting the Traveller community in Cork. Through a range of initiatives focused on health, leadership, employment, and mental health, the CTVG works tirelessly to empower Travellers and promote inclusion within the wider community. John O’Sullivan and Patrick McDonagh reflect on the group’s transformative impact over the years, highlighting its ongoing efforts to address the twin challenges of discrimination and stigma.

*GOAL JERSEY DAY*
This year, with the support of Titan, GOAL launched the Design Your Own Jersey Competition. Each school that took part in Jersey Day had the option to submit one entry into the competition. The entries are then voted on by the public, and the student with the winning design will have their jersey produced for them and all their classmates!
The entry for our school came from Mr. Doran’s class, a beautiful jersey designed by Ciara Monaghan!

Unfortunately it has just come to our attention that some fake sponsorship cards for our Halloween Walk have been going around the village where people who are not pupils in our school have been looking for and collecting money.
Please only buy lines off students who you are 100% sure are current pupils in our school. Please pass this message around the shops & people in the village also.
