This verse highlights that People were and still are astonished at the teachers of Jesus. You simply can’t fault a single thing He claimed. And Not a simple world leader will draw issue with what Jesus said or try and challenge him in a public setting.

But this presents a deeper issue at hand. If Jesus’ teachings were so Good why do so few follow it?

This questions draws focus on the real issue. The human condition to rebel against God’s word, to not follow God but rather pursue the freedom to be your own judge and moral code giver.

The offer made by the serpent and accepted by Eve and ultimately Adam.

Is the issue hasn’t changed The neither has solution - trust God’s words.

Israel will be restored.

God says “if you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that there will not be a day and night in their season, then my covenant may also be broken with David my servant, so that he shall not have a son to reign on His throne. Jeremiah 33:20-21

Here God acknowledges the permanent nature of the Davidic covenant, which he initiated in 2 Samuel 7.

“So now, thus you shall say to My servant David: Thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make your name as great as the greatest on earth. I will also set up a place for My people Israel and will plant them, so they may dwell in their own place and not be disturbed again. Nor will the children of wickedness afflict them anymore as in the past, since the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. So I will give you rest from all your enemies. “Moreover, Adonai declares to you that Adonai will make a house for you. When your days are done and you sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your seed, who will come forth from you after you, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me.

Messiah will do as promised.

If Jesus was led by the spirit of God at the beginning of His ministry immediately after his baptism, then it’s safe to say that the spirit likewise led him all over the Judaea, Samaritan country side. Seeking out the lost, saving the chosen and challenging the principalities, powers, & the rulers of the darkness in this world.

Why do I believe this, simple because according to John the spirit remained on him & in him.

To be mission focused is to be spirit led. Thus we as Christian’s must ask the obvious question - How do I gain the spirit? That is what we as Christian’s must seek to understand through his word.

The beatitudes are still the characteristic check list of a true follower of Jesus.

The order in which Jesus presented these however clearly highlight a blueprint of a Christian’s journey from start to finish. Each stage leading a believer closer and closer to Christ by sharing in His sufferings.

Those that purify their hearts will see Jesus & partake in His glory as we become more willing to suffer for His name sake.

The key word of the gospel Of John; believe.
“But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, son of God and that believing you may have life in His name” John 20:31

When Jesus said He would build His church on this “rock”. What was “that” rock?

Jesus often quoted from the Old Testament when he was teaching and explaining to His disciples the truths of God that are now being revealed.

So we too shall see what the Old Testament has to say about the Rock.

Genesis 49:24
But His now remained firm, and His arms were agile, from the hands of the mighty one of Jacob (from there is the shepherd, the Stone of Israel)

The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright He is.

1 Samuel 2:2
There is no one Holy like the LORD, indeed, there is no one besides you, Nor is there any rock like our God.

Psalm 18:2
The Lord is my Rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my Rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the Horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Who is the rock that the church will be built on? The very words that Peter like the prophets of Old professed.

The declaration that Peter made was simple and clear Jesus is the son of the living God. The Holy one of Israel. The redeemer, the restorer, the king of kings and lord of lords. The rock that was spoken of and now standing before man.

That Rock which the church stands on to this day - is and cannot be Peter but rather Jesus who is Lord of all.

The rock is God and God has come. Emmanuel.
