The Jewish Music Research Centre (JMRC) is an academic institution dedicated to the documentation, research and publication of scholarly materials about Jewish music. Israel Adler, the JMRC is one of the oldest research centers of the Faculty of Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. ) and at the Itzhak Rabin Building for the World Center of Jewish Studies (Mandel Institute of Jewish Studies) in the Mount Scopus campus, the staff of the JMRC works in close cooperation with the Hebrew University’s Department of Musicology and the Institute of Jewish Studies as well as with the Music Department and National Sound Archives (NSA) of the NLI. All recorded and written documents gathered by the JMRC staff are kept at the Music Department and the NSA of the NLI. The main task of the JMRC is to study the musical cultures of Jewish communities of the past and present. Research encompasses ethnographies of extant oral traditions as well as historically-oriented research focusing on the interpretation of Jewish musical cultures in their widest possible social, cultural and historical context because a full appreciation of the Jewish musical traditions must refer to the musical cultures of the non-Jewish societies with whom the Jews were in close contact for the past two millennia. Thus many projects are carried on in conjunction with colleagues and institutions from around the world, expanding the vistas to co-territorial musical cultures. The results of the JMRC Projects are published in four series of publications: Yuval - Studies of the JMRC (continued by Yuval Online); Yuval Monograph Series (distributed by Magnes Press); Yuval Music Series (scores and source materials); and the Anthology of Music Traditions in Israel (CDs). המרכז לחקר המוסיקה היהודית הנו מוסד אקדמי שמטרתו לתעד, לחקור ולפרסם מידע מחקרי אודות המוסיקה היהודית. המרכז נוסד בשנת 1964 על ידי פרופ' ישראל אדלר, והוא מהוותיקים שבמרכזי המחקר של הפקולטה למדעי הרוח באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים. הוא ממוקם בבניין הספרייה הלאומית שבקמפוס אדמונד י' ספרא של האוניברסיטה (גבעת רם), ובבנין יצחק רבין של המכון למדעי היהדות ע"ש מנדל שבקמפוס הר הצופים. סגל המרכז עובד בשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם המחלקה למוסיקולוגיה של האוניברסיטה העברית ועם המכון למדעי היהדות, כמו גם עם מחלקת המוסיקה וארכיון הצליל הלאומי שבספרייה הלאומית. כל ההקלטות והמסמכים שנאספו על ידי סגל המרכז נשמרים במחלקת המוסיקה ובארכיון הצליל הלאומי שבספרייה הלאומית.
תפקידו העיקרי של המרכז הוא לחקור את התרבויות המוסיקליות של קהילות יהודיות בעבר ובהווה. המחקר כולל אתנוגרפיות של מסורות בע"פ ששרדו עד ימינו, וכן מחקר היסטורי השופך אור על תרבויות מוסיקליות יהודיות בהקשרן החברתי, התרבותי וההיסטורי הרחב ביותר. הקשר זה נחוץ כדי להבין הבנה מלאה את המסורות המוסיקליות היהודיות, שכן הכרחי לבחון אותן על רקע התרבויות המוסיקליות של החברות הלא יהודיות שעמן היו היהודים בקשר הדוק במשך כאלפיים שנה. כך מבוצעים רבים מהפרויקטים בשיתוף עם עמיתים ומכונים ממקומות שונים בעולם, ומרחיבים את התמונה בשילוב מידע אודות תרבויות מוסיקליות נוספות שצמחו באותם מקומות.
תוצרי המחקרים הנערכים במרכז יוצאים לאור בארבע סדרות של פרסומים: יובל – קובץ מחקרים (ועתה גם יובל אונליין); יובל – סדרת מונוגרפיות (המופצת על ידי הוצאת הספרים ע"ש י"ל מאגנס); יובל – סדרת מוסיקה (תווים וחומרי מקור); והאנתולוגיה של מסורות מוסיקה בישראל (תקליטורים). המרכז מפיק גם את סדרת התקליטורים החדשנית "מוסיקה יהודית בת זמננו". לקבלת פרטים על הפרסומים ולרכישתם אנא פנו אל חנות המרכז.
