CSUS mourns the loss of our friend and colleague, Dr. Hayim Katsman, who was brutally murdered on October 7 in Kibbutz Holit. Hayim was a friend of the Center who participated in several of our events and contributed a brilliant article to our forthcoming edited volume, "The Americanization of the Israeli Right," which will be dedicated to his memory.

Hayim was a Renaissance Man with many talents and interests and a pioneering scholar of Israel Studies who published several notable research articles.

פרופ׳ גיא בן פורת נפרד מד״ר חיים כצמן ז״ל.

"מצמיח חיים, מציל חיים" ספד הרב לחיים כצמן בלוויה.
ביום שבת בערב שלחתי ווטסאפ לכצמן. ידעתי שהוא בקיבוץ חולית ודאגתי. ביום ראשון בבוקר, ניסיתי שוב. שעה אחרי כן הגיעה הידיעה על מותו. לא היינו חברים קרובים, ובכל זאת מיום ראשון אני מוצא את עצמי מנגב את העיניים שוב ושוב.

הכרנו לפני בערך עשר שנים. אני לימדתי את קורס המבוא ליחסים בין לאומיים, חיים היה המתרגל שלי. היה בו מה שהוא יוצא דופן, ידיים חזקות של איש עבודה, תמיד עם סימני גריז על אצבעותיו. במקביל ללימודיו, הסביר, עבד במוסך בקיבוץ, מספרים שהיו לו ידי זהב. אחר כך, עבד בנוי של הקיבוץ. מספרים שעשה פלאות בגינון המטופח של היישוב המדברי.

שכסיים את לימודי המ.א. במחלקה, המשיך ללימודי דוקטורט באוניברסיטה בסיאטל. יואל מגדל, המנחה שלו, מחשובי החוקרים של ישראל בעולם, סיפר בלוויה על תלמיד שקט, שלעיתים נראה חולמני, אבל שכאשר דיבר ניכר היה בחריפותו וחשיבתו המעמיקה. "היתה לו נשמה גדולה," אמר מגדל.
הקשר בינינו נשמר. היינו מתכתבים, נפגשנו מפעם לפעם וגם כתבנו ביחד, שני מאמרים. כצמן, שבא מהעולם הדתי, חקר את הציונות הדתית על גווניה, ובעיקר את המגמות אחרי ההתנתקות. הוא ביקש ללמוד וללמד אותנו על המורכבות שבה. באחת ההתכתבויות האחרונות בינינו, ביוני, כתבתי להתייעץ איתן ולהחמיא לו מאמר "בהארץ" על עלייתה של השמרנות הדתית ועל פורום "קהלת." חכם ומעמיק כדרכו.

כצמן אהב את המקום הזה ואת הקיבוץ שבקצה המדבר בפרט. כשהציעו לו להמשיך ללימודי פוסט-דוקטורט בארצות הברית, סירב. הוא רצה לחזור הביתה, למקום שאהב. משם, המשיך לכתוב ולחקור, לטפח את הנוי בקיבוץ ולחלום על העתיד של המקום. ושם, במקום שהכי אהב, תוך שהציל אחרים בגבורה, גם מצא את מותו.

איש של שלום היה כצמן, באישיותו ובדברים שעשה. לצד עבודתו האקדמית, הפך עצמו גם לדי.ג'י של מוסיקה ערבית, היה פעיל בארגוני שלום וזכויות אדם ולא היסס לומר את דעתו, בשקט ובנחישות שכל כך איפיינה אותו.
כצמן האמין שיש כאן מקום לכולנו, שחייב להיות, ושיכול להיות טוב יותר. אני חושב שהוא היה רוצה שגם אנחנו נמשיך להאמין בזה.
