Researchers Suggest A Different Way For Farmers To Reduce Their Carbon Footprint......

According to the USDA, agriculture is responsible for more than 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The easiest way to reduce that number might be to increase the amount of carbon farmers put back into the ground and out of the atmosphere. Enter crushed basalt rock. Every two to three years, many farmers apply crushed limestone to their fields to regulate soil acidity and keep crops healthy. But scientists are now running tests in fields around the world to see if using crushed basalt will work as well on the soil while also reducing agriculture's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Chris Reinhard teaches earth and atmospheric sciences at Georgia Tech. He says while all rocks help sequester carbon when they're buried in the soil, basalt does it better than most.

Dust to combat the climate crisis?

Dust, or more precisely basalt dust, could improve soil’s carbon storage abilities. When scattered on fields it reacts with CO2 dissolved in soil water, according to researchers writing in peer-reviewed journal, Nature Geoscience. The particles are then washed into lakes and oceans before being deposited as sediment. The process also occurs naturally. But it occurs more quickly with finely ground basalt because of its large surface area. Basalt also secretes minerals that boost plant growth in nutrient-poor soils, which in turn would store more CO2.

Improve your soil health by using basalt Rock dust

Rock Dust & Remineralization

If you’re coming into organic growing and perhaps done a bit of light reading, you’ve likely noticed the term remineralization in many of your sources. If you haven’t, remineralization is the utilization of rock dust in your soil to provide a slow release of minerals and trace elements. Using rock dust in your garden mimics the earths natural cycle of fertility, as soil and rock wear down and are leached into the water it accumulates in glaciers; during ice age these minerals are returned to earth. Over time volcanic activity pulls minerals and metals from their slumber deep in the earth, and volcanic ash helps spread them to the wind. But not all rock dust are equal, or optimal for any grow condition. Let’s take a look at their differences, and find which will work best for your garden. The major types of rock dust, or remineralization products, marketed to growers today are: Azomite, Glacial Rock Dust, Basalt, Gypsum, and Sea-90. That’s quite a selection, and some have uses that others do not, so rightfully some people may be confused about which to use, or which ones are okay to be used together.

Basalt Rock Dust is made from igneous rock which means it hasn’t been processed or had any of nutrients leached, as consequence it has most of the rare elements found in Azomite®, while having incredibly low levels of the elements that are more toxic (lead, arsenic, etc.). Basalt has quite a high amount of silica, and weathers much quicker than any other rock dust, so it becomes available quicker. It’s also a good slow source of Phosphorus & Potassium, and will balance the pH of the soil. It provide some of the lowest sodium levels of any rock dust, and is found in great amounts, so generally speaking one of the cheapest of the rock dust. Glacial Rock Dust and Basalt together provide all the elements needed for mineralization of a medical garden, in my anecdotal experience.

It's turned it into a solid with carbon mineralisation. Basalt rock, rich in elements like calcium, magnesium turn into calcite & magnesite. It's no longer CO2. Trees use CO2 in air entering into their leaves through stomata. Basalt dust can help plants with its minerals though.

in broad spectrum, organic mineral fertilizers that everyone can use without a soil test.

In the last century, our actions have caused a depletion of soil minerals to the point where many of our soils are severely deficient in minerals.

One of the ways this problem gets fixed is when volcanoes erupt, distributing minerals around the earth, and during periods of glaciation, when glaciers break up and redistribute many different kinds of rock as they move across the land, resulting in big changes in soil fertility.

But we obviously can’t wait until then to improve our soils – and besides, it get awfully hot and cold during either of those processes 🙂

Fortunately, we’ve learned that we can do a little work ourselves by taking (from volcanoes) and we can add it to our soil to boost fertility.

Rocklogy Agro's "Rocklogy rock dust" contain mainly basalt dust with some other different mineral rock dust. Rocklogy Rock Dust is an all natural soil amendment that is made from ground up volcanic rocks. Basalt is comprised of Igneous rock that is found in many places around the world. Since basalt will break down easily in soils, it is a good choice for re-mineralizing flowerbeds and gardens.

But Why Is Rocklogy rock dust So Important To Use To Re-minrelize My Soil?

First you have to understand the basics of soil balancing. Most people know that you need to focus on the N-P-K levels of the soil. The Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium, are the most sought after nutrients when people first try to begin to balance their soils. They are considered macro-nutrients. Macro means large or big. In this case, macro means that the N-P-K along with things like Calcium & Magnesium are the largest nutrients available in the soil, and thus people feel they are the most important. That's not necessarily true.

Micro-nutrients can be just as important when looking to balance your soil. Micro-nutrients can be things like iron, manganese, boron, molybdenum, copper, zinc, etc.. Now I know you are thinking that if the soil only needs a little bit of these, why does it matter if I replace them or replenish them? For this you need to learn Liebig's Law of Minimums.

In the 19th century, Justus Von Liebig formulated the “Law of the Minimum,” which states that if one of the essential plant nutrients is deficient, plant growth will be poor even when all other essential nutrients are abundant. From this, it may be inferred that if the deficient nutrient is supplied, yields may be improved to the point that some other nutrient is needed in greater quantity than the soil can provide, and the Law of the Minimum would apply in turn to that nutrient. And so on, and so forth, until your soil is perfectly balanced.

10/10/2021

What Does This Mean For Me When I Am Trying To Balance My Soil?

Basically whatever your soil is missing, no matter the amount needed in the soil, that is the thing you need to focus on. Regardless if it's only a trace amount that is needed, you need to make sure that your soil contains that trace amount. If not, your plants won't grow to their fullest potential. The easiest way to figure all of this out is to get a soil test. Making sure to get a test that covers all of the micro-nutrients is a good idea to make sure your soil is performing optimally for best plant growth.

Basalt is an igneous rock created through the cooling and solidification of magma and lava. When ground down into a fine powder, it makes a very good soil improver. Igneous rocks like basalt and granite have the highest mineral content, with basalt providing a greater balance of nutrients for optimal plant health and vitality.
Basalt, or rock dust, continues to deliver a steady flow of nutrients over time, even as it decomposes. Basalt’s slow-release benefits make it an effective way to minimize deficiencies, particularly with fast-growing crops that experience periods of rapid nutrient uptake
No amount of organic matter added to the soil can make up for mineral deficiencies. If your crops are performing poorly, even with the benefits of compost, slow release fertilizer and good drainage then the soil could be mineral deficient. A soil test is always a good idea to help point you in the right direction.
As decomposing rock material reacts with soil micro-organisms and plant material, the rock material releases elements like calcium, magnesium and iron. Basalt contains a high content of readily metabolisable silica and lime which promote soil fertility. Remineralization with rock dust is a low-cost, high-impact way to aid in the regeneration of soil. The chemical analysis of basalt reveals that it is approximately 44% silica, 9% CaO (Calcium Oxide) , and 11% iron oxide.
Plants benefit in many ways from adding silica to the soil. These benefits include greater tolerance of environmental stresses, such as heat, cold, drought, salt build up, mineral toxicity or deficiency. They also, experience accelerated growth rates, and improved resistance to insects and fungal diseases. Silica is an essential building block for the structure of your plants.
Plants incorporate silica into their cell wall, which then acts as a barrier against invading fungi such as powdery mildew and Pythium (root rot), significantly reducing the need to use fungicides. Additional silicon is stored as protection and foundational support between cells, making plants more resistant to insects and other environmental stresses, such as heat or drought.

Thicker cell walls also build bigger stems and branches, which in turn allows more food and water to move through the plant. Leaves are thicker and darker green compared to those grown without soluble silicon. This produces a stronger plant overall, with higher chlorophyll production and greater rates of photosynthesis and growth. As a result plants are able to produce heavier fruits, vegetables, and flowers on branches that support the extra weight. The shelf life of cut flowers and specialty crops is also extended
The benefits of silica are particularly evident in stressful situations. Following a fungal infection, greater deposits of silicon are found around the affected plant tissue showing that silicon is selectively accumulated at the site. The silicon deposited at the sites of infection form stronger, harder cell walls in order to deter the fungus.
