“GIRLS VISION FOR THE FUTURE”
In observance of International Girls Child Day, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Srinagar, in collaboration with the School of Education Department, Srinagar, organized an awareness program at Government Boys Higher Secondary School Mujgund on October 11, 2024. The programme was conducted under the able guidance of Worthy Mr. Jaffer Hussain Beg, Chairman District Legal Services Authority/Pr. District and Sessions Judge Srinagar, and under the supervision of Ms. Nusrat Ali Hakak, Sub-Judge/Secretary, District Legal Services Authority Srinagar, which was aimed to aimed to empower and educate young girls about their legal rights and opportunities. The objective was to promote awareness about issues like gender equality, child marriage, and domestic violence, providing girls with the knowledge and resources they need to protect themselves and advocate for their rights.
The program, attended by the principal, staff members, students of Government Boys Higher Secondary School Mujgund , Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel Ms. SeharNazir, and Para Legal Volunteers of DLSA Srinagar.
Ms. Sehar Nazir, served as the resource person for the program. She captivated the students with her insightful speech, highlighting the significance of girls' education and their rights. She also emphasized the importance of equal opportunities and encouraged the girls to pursue their dreams, breaking free from societal limitations, urging the participants to actively advocate for their rights and contribute towards a more equitable society.
The enthusiastic participation of the students showcased their eagerness to learn and contribute to a brighter future.The program concluded with a Q&A session where students actively engaged with Ms. Nazir, seeking clarification on various legal and social issues.

Awareness Programme on the importance of Mental Health in Professional Efficiency held at University of Jammu
Jammu, October 10, 2024: In a significant event commemorating “World Mental Health Day, 2024” the J&K Legal Services Authority in collaboration with the Department of Law, University of Jammu, organized an awareness programme on the Importance of Mental Health in Professional Efficiency at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, University of Jammu. The event was graced by the august presence of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tashi Rabstan, Chief Justice, High Court of J&K and Ladakh and Patron-in-Chief, J&K Legal Services Authority. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 700 law students, faculty members, and legal professionals.
On his arrival, the Chief Justice Tashi Rabstan, who was accompanied by M. K. Sharma, Principal Secretary and Amit Kumar Gupta, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority was warmly received by Prof. Meena Sharma, Officiating Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Planning, University of Jammu, Prof. (Dr.) Manju Jamwal, Head, Department of Law, University of Jammu, along with other esteemed HoDs and faculty members.
The dignitaries were accorded floral welcome and the event began with the traditional lighting of lamp followed by playing of NALSA Theme song.
Addressing a large gathering of law students and faculty members of law department and School of Law, the Chief Justice began his address by expressing heartfelt gratitude to the eminent Resource persons for their collective efforts in promoting mental well-being within the legal fraternity on the commemoration of World Mental Health Day, 2024. He emphasized that maintaining good mental health is not only a personal responsibility but also a professional necessity, particularly in high-pressure fields like law and the judiciary. Highlighting the importance of self-care in preventing burnout and ensuring long-term well-being, the Chief Justice remarked "The mantra for healthy mental health is to spare time for yourself,". He cautioned about the potential dangers of technology, stating that while it offers immense benefits, its misuse can be detrimental to mental health. Furthermore, he drew attention to the adverse effects of poor lifestyle choices, such as consuming junk food and inadequate sleep, which contribute to rise in mental disorders. Chief Justice Tashi noted, that effective time management is key to avoid stress and leading a healthier life, especially for judges and advocates who often have to work on weekends and holidays also.
Chief Justice further called for a supportive work environment where open dialogue and mental health resources are readily available, enabling professionals to perform at their best while breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues. He concluded by encouraging all the participants to engage in creative and physical activities as a means to refresh their minds and promote overall well-being.
In her welcome address, Prof. (Dr.) Manju Jamwal, Head, Department of Law, University of Jammu, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests and highlighted the collaborative efforts between the University of Jammu and J&K Legal Services Authority in organizing today’s programme which in the present scenario is of immense importance especially for the younger generation.
Prof. (Dr.) Meena Sharma, Officiating Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Planning, University of Jammu, laid emphases on the role of mental well-being in both academic and professional success. She explained how maintaining a balanced mental state enhances cognitive abilities and contributes to sustained professional growth and resilience. Dr. Sharma encouraged educational institutions to incorporate mental health support systems into their frameworks to foster a thriving academic environment and build resilience among students and professionals.
Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Gupta, Department of Law, University of Jammu tracing the legal history about mental inadequacy of a litigant referred to various legislations especially the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 and pointed out the shortcoming therein. He highlighted the need of providing legal aid and assistance not only to the litigants but also to the students and working professionals. He advocated for counselling and stress management workshops to overcome the menace of growing mental ill health in the young generation which ends to go astray due to mental stress levels. He highlighted the need for creating a culture of mental well-being within legal education institutions, where students are equipped with the tools to manage stress effectively. Prof. Sanjay also appoint that increased tendency of nuclear families is also a big cause for mental ill health.
Dr. Manu Arora, Head, Psychiatry Department, Govt. Medical College Jammu presented an insightful overview of the mental health challenges faced by professionals in high-stakes fields like law. He highlighted common mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion, all of which negatively impact productivity and decision-making. Dr. Arora stressed the importance of early intervention and continuous support, recommending regular mental health check-ups and access to mental health resources in the workplace.
Dr. Rakesh Banal, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, Govt. Medical College, Jammu focused on practical strategies for managing mental health. He introduced techniques such as mindfulness, relaxation exercises, and cognitive-behavioral strategies that can help professionals maintain emotional balance. He emphasized the importance of self-care and work-life balance, warning of the detrimental effects of neglecting personal well-being on both professional and personal lives.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Smt. Smriti Sharma, Secretary, DLSA Jammu, who expressed gratitude to the distinguished dignitaries, faculty, and students for their participation. The proceedings were expertly conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Hardeep Kour.

Awareness-cum-Interaction Programme Organized at University of Kashmir
Srinagar, October 09, 2024: The J&K Legal Services Authority in collaboration with The School of Law, University of Kashmir today organized a significant Awareness-cum-Interaction Programme at Gandhi Bhawan, University of Kashmir. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge, High Court of J&K and Ladakh and Executive Chairman, J&K Legal Services Authority. Today’s event marks the first official programme presided over by Justice Sreedharan after being appointed as the Executive Chairman of J&K Legal Services Authority, setting a strong precedent for future initiatives aimed at enhancing legal literacy and access to justice across the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.
On his arrival, Justice Sreedharan, who was accompanied by Amit Kumar Gupta, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority and Mr. Abdul Bari, Joint Registrar Protocol, High Court of J&K and Ladakh, was warmly received by Prof. Nilofar Khan, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Hussain, Head and Dean, School of Law, University of Kashmir and other faculty members.
The event started with playing of University Tarana followed by NALSA theme song. Addressing a large gathering of law students and faculty members of law department and School of Law, Justice Sreedharan shared profound insights on the role of judges and legal practitioners. He remarked, "As judges, we judge the case before us, not the human beings involved, although the repercussions of our judgments affect people deeply." He encouraged students to expand their horizons by reading books beyond legal texts, emphasizing that such readings can greatly enhance their skills in professional careers. Elaborating on the point, Justice Sreedharan mentioned, "A book on corporate affairs may not seem relevant to a lawyer practicing on criminal side, but it can provide immense help whenever he gets a chance to deal with a case involving corporate issues."
Justice Sreedharan also underscored the importance of reading biographies of legal stalwarts, noting that such reading provides valuable lessons for aspiring lawyers. He further emphasized that the qualities essential for success in the legal profession include Hard work and commitment to the case handed out to him by a litigant. He further said that the heart of a lawyer should be like a tiger—bold and fearless in pursuing a client's case while being fair to the court. He added that respect for seniors and learning the court craft from them are the two biggest traits of an advocate which are key to success in this field."
In his welcome address, Prof. Mohammad Hussain, Head and Dean, School of Law, University of Kashmir, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests and highlighted the collaborative efforts between the University of Kashmir and the Jammu & Kashmir Legal Services Authority (JKSLA). He emphasized the pivotal role of budding law students in shaping the future of the legal profession, stating that hard work, determination, and consistent efforts are the key elements of success. However, he stressed that these qualities must be accompanied by a fair code of discipline and a commitment to punctuality to truly excel in their careers.
Prof. Nilofar Khan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, in her address expressed deep gratitude to Justice Sreedharan for sparing valuable time out of his busy schedule to mentor the budding law students. Informing the gathering she said that the Alumni of Law Department, University of Kashmir are not only leaving an indelible mark within and outside UT of J&K but also all over the globe.
She also highlighted the potential role, law students can play in the governance of the nation as also the critical role of the judiciary in ensuring social justice and access to justice. Prof. Khan urged law students to stay prepared for challenges ahead, especially with the impact of technology on the legal system and advised them to be knowledgeable, open to learning, and compassionate.
The event also witnessed various queries raised by the students in the interactive session that were answered by the Chief Guest to their satisfaction. Lastly a skit on free legal aid was presented by the law students of Drama and Theatre Society of Law School which creatively showcased the importance of legal aid in providing justice to marginalized communities and highlighted how legal assistance can transform the lives of those who cannot afford it.
Dr. Mir Junaid Alam, Senior Assistant Professor, School of Law, University of Kashmir presented the formal vote of thanks by expressing deep gratitude to the esteemed dignitaries, faculty, and students for making the event a resounding success.
On the occasion, a Plantation Drive was also conducted wherein the Chief Guest and dignitaries planted trees of different varieties in the front lawns of the School of Law, reflecting the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability. 05 October 2024, Pampore– The 2nd Annual BML Welfare Silver Rolling Trophy witnessed one of the most exhilarating matches of the tournament on Day 6, as Birla Open Minds International School (BOMIS) Pampore clashed with Green Valley Educational Institute in the second semifinal.
The match itself became the most intense contest of the tournament so far. After a hard-fought battle, the game went into extra time, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. With the final click of the clock, BOMIS Pampore clinched victory with a score of 23 to 19.
Fouzan from BOMIS emerged as the standout player, delivering a tremendous performance. His contribution of 6 points and 2 assists earned him the prestigious "Man of the Match" title, proving instrumental in BOMIS Pampore’s march to the finals.

Pampore, 1st October 2024 – The 2nd BML Basketball Silver Rolling Trophy at Birla Open Minds International School (BOMIS) Pampore continued to deliver thrilling action on Day 3. The pre-match event featured Ms. Shaista Gul, Trustee of the BML Welfare Trust, who encouraged the young athletes, praising their dedication and passion for the game.
The day's highlight was the boys' match between BOMIS Pampore and Dolphin International School. Both teams battled fiercely, with the match reaching a nail-biting climax in the third quarter. Ultimately, BOMIS Pampore emerged victorious with a final score of 34-27.
Saffan was named Player of the Match for his outstanding contribution of 18 points and 3 assists, leading his team to a hard-fought win.

Birla Open Minds International School Pampore Hosts First Inter-School Roller Skating Competition
Pampore, September 28, 2024— Birla Open Minds International School, Pampore, successfully organized the first-ever Inter-School Roller Skating Competition today. The event, held from Chandhara Crossing to the school campus along NH 44, saw enthusiastic participation from 80 students representing various districts of Jammu & Kashmir.
The competition was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri B. R. Meena, Commandant of CRPF 110 Battalion, who encouraged the students to pursue sports as a way to build discipline and physical fitness. The Guest of Honour, Shri Kuldeep Singh, Deputy Commandant of CRPF 110 Battalion, was also present and praised the organizing efforts of the school, emphasizing the importance of extracurricular activities in a student's holistic development.

Worthy Pr. District and Sessions Judge Srinagar, Mr. Jaffer Hussain Beg along with Secretary District Legal Services Authority Srinagar, Ms. Nusrat Ali Hakak personally visited and inspected Central Jail Srinagar. This visit aimed to gain first-hand knowledge of the living conditions of inmates and the overall functioning of the jail by interaction with the inmates and by taking first hand stock of all the things there.
The inspection covered a wide range of areas, including the Jail Legal Aid Clinic, Welfare Block, Vocational Training Centre, Computer Training Centre, Music and Fine Arts Centre, Calligraphy Centre, Jail Hospital, Kitchen Area, Women Block Prisoners, and the exclusive Women-Centric Tailoring Centre. The Medical Center within the jail premises was also thoroughly inspected, with special focus on the de-addiction facilities provided to the inmates.
Throughout the visit, Mr. Jaffer Hussain Beg, Ms.Nusrat Ali Hakak, and the DLSA team, along with Mr. Sheikh Zulfikar Azad, Sr. Superintendent of Central Jail Srinagar, Mr. Shahbaz Hussain Bhat, Deputy Superintendent, Central Jail Srinagar, Medical Officers and prison staff, inspected all the barracks and interacted with inmates, including female prisoners. The team listened attentively to the inmates' concerns and grievances & provided them a platform for feedback on the services provided by DLSA Srinagar.
The inspection served as a vital step in ensuring that the rights and welfare of inmates are upheld within the Central Jail Srinagar. District Legal Services Authority, Srinagar remains committed to collaborating with the jail administration to improve living conditions and empower inmates through access to free legal aid, vocational training, and other essential services.

In his welcome address Mr. Naseer Ahmad Dar, Principal District & Sessions Judge, Pulwama expressed sincere gratitude to the Chief Justice for exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to the development of judicial infrastructure throughout the UT of J&K and UT of Ladakh in general and district Pulwama in perticular. He also expressed gratitude to Hon'ble Mr. Justice Rajnesh Oswal, Judge High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladkah who as the Administrative Judge for District Pulwama, has been a constant source of support and guidance.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tashi Rabstan inaugurated the newly created Court of Special Judge (NDPS), Security Barrack constructed for the overall security of the Court Complex, and a Satellite OPD (AYUSH) dispensary. The Chief Justice and Justice Rajnesh Oswal engaged in a fruitful interaction with the Judicial Officers and members of the Bar, focusing on strengthening the legal infrastructure in the district.
In his presidential address, Justice Tashi Rabstan underscored the paramount need for developing robust judicial infrastructure and ensuring a safe and conducive environment for effective and speedy justice. He expressed his commitment to promoting an inclusive and responsive judicial system that meets the evolving needs of society.
Justice Rajnesh Oswal, in his special address, extended heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Justice for his dedicated efforts in enhancing the judicial infrastructure of the district. He assured the members of the Bar of continued support and pledged to address the remaining issues to further elevate the justice delivery system.
The event was graced by the presence of other distinguished dignitaries, including Mr. Shahzad Azeem, Registrar General of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh; Mr. M.K. Sharma, Principal Secretary to the Chief Justice; Mr. Amit Kumar Gupta, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority. The vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Junaid Bhat President District Bar Association Pulwama and proceedings were moderated by Mr. Zahoor Ahmad Ganie Secretary DLSA Pulwama.
