DECENTRING ELT CONFERENCE
1 pm GMT, 6.30 pm IST
The Hornby Educational Trust (https://www.hornby-trust.org.uk/) celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Since 1961, when the Trust was founded, over 450 ‘Hornby scholars’ have been supported to study for Master’s degrees in the UK. The Trust has also supported regional workshops in collaboration with the British Council around the world, aside from supporting numerous small-scale projects, in particular with English language Teacher Associations (TAs).
With a principal focus on English teaching in public education systems in low- and middle-income countries, an implicit overall goal of the Hornby Trust has always been to enable capacity development and status-building among teachers of English in relatively low-resource contexts. Recently, the Trust’s ‘Decentring ELT’ initiative (https://www.hornby-trust.org.uk/decentring-elt) has been making this goal more explicit, with a particular focus on supporting work by TAs to value and develop local expertise.
On December 3rd–4th 2021, the Hornby Trust is organising a conference online, in collaboration with AINET Association of English Teachers and the Centre for English Language Education, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi. This conference will celebrate the Trust’s 60th anniversary but will also enable us to look to the future by:
- inviting wider reflection / consultation on the notion of ‘Decentring ELT’
- inspiring further activity in this area
- gathering information to feed into continuing reflection on / activity relating to Decentring ELT
