Have you ever felt depressed about not being able to sleep?😴 Have you ever had difficulty falling asleep when feeling depressed? If you have, you are not alone because the relationship between sleep and depression is longstanding and complicated for many. Restful and restorative sleep is a necessary aspect of emotional wellness. Without good sleep, our emotional resiliency is hindered, and we are less equipped to handle the stressors of life effectively. Perhaps Dr. Frederick Snyder said it best when he said, “Troubled minds have troubled sleep, and troubled sleep leads to troubled minds.” #sleeptips #sleephealth #benefitsofsleep #sleeptips #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #mentalhealthtips #sleepformentalhealth #sleepforhealth Source: John Hopkins Medicine. “Depression and Sleep: Understanding the Connection.” Www.hopkinsmedicine.org, hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/depression-and-sleep-understanding-the-connection. Getting a restful night’s sleep is good for our emotional and physical well-being, but sometimes that dream of getting a good night’s sleep feels more like a nightmare. 😴It is estimated somewhere between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from Insomnia.¹ We toss, and we turn, arguing with ourselves for not being tired, pleading with ourselves to get just a few good hours of sleep, and worrying about how tomorrow will be a nightmare to get through because we will be so exhausted from our nightly attempt to catch those Z’s. So why is sleep so important if it feels out of reach at times? Without restful sleep we may experience²: 💤Mood instability 💤Difficulty processing and retaining information learned throughout the day 💤Loss of focus and attention, which increases risk of injury 💤Decrease in productivity in the workplace 💤Impaired judgment 💤Negative impacts on overall physical wellness, including an increased risk of Diabetes, Obesity, and 💤Cardiovascular Disease #yourmindworx #sleepformentalhealth #sleeptips #mentalwellness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthtips #sleephealth #sleepforhealth Source: Stevenson, Aaron. “How Important Is Sleep? – American Sleep Association.” American Sleep Association, 2011, www.sleepassociation.org/about-sleep/how-important-is-sleep/. 5 Things to do to Feel Better Fast!
Mindworx Head of Coaching & Performance, @coachsarahbogdanski shares her techniques and tools to work through negative thoughts and feelings for when you’re generally not feeling great mentally and emotionally. “When I’m feeling in a slump, I just want to feel better–and fast! Here are five things I personally do that work every single time.” ➡️ I get moving! Any bit of exercise always makes me feel better - even if it’s just a quick walk around the park. This brings me to number two… ➡️ I spend time in nature. Just getting some fresh air in my lungs and Vitamin D–always does a mind and a body good. ➡️ I do something nice for someone else. It could be as simple as cooking a nice dinner for my family or donating to a cause I care about. Doing things for others focuses on my suffering and transfers that energy into something positive. ➡️ I make a plan. Whether it’s a quick coffee date with a friend or planning out a vacation for several months from now, it always helps my mood to have something exciting to look forward to. ➡️ I consider what I’m grateful for. Focusing on all the good things in life and gratitude journaling specifically are proven to be effective at elevating our mood and helping us be more optimistic. Sleep is necessary for the brain to refuel and the mind to recharge. Being awake for 16 hours straight decreases your performance as much as if your blood alcohol level were .05% (over .08% can get you a DWI!) 😴Sleep is vital for memory recall and emotional stability. When we do not get enough restful sleep we become more sensitive and easily irritated, and we can engage in more impulsive decision-making. Our stress level is also negatively affected when we do not get enough restful sleep.
