On Friday, the New York City Council passed the FY25 budget, which includes $41 million to restore federal COVID-era funding for arts education and $4 million to protect the “Support for Arts Instruction” initiative, which helps improve arts access in schools with limited instruction. The budget also includes $53 million to restore funding for cultural institutions and the Cultural Development Fund, which support critical arts partnerships for students and help spur their growth. Last week, New York City Public Schools and Chancellor David Banks announced a $25 million investment to support academic recovery through the arts in the 2023-2024 school year — including funding for arts partnerships, arts-based professional development, field trips, and F-status arts teachers. After agreement with Mayor Eric Adams, the New York City Council is set to approve the City’s Fiscal 2024 Budget, which sustains and increases funding for “Support for Arts Instruction” and arts partnerships in New York City Public Schools. The initiative – which began last year – will support standard arts instruction programs with a focus on increasing access to the arts and supporting pathways for sequential arts learning.
