Online classes are always double the effort, both by the teacher as well as the students. The effort is often more on the part of the students who have to stare hard at their screens and try and mimic the same movements to the best of their understanding. But with detailed and patient instructions by the teacher and more importantly sincere practice by the students virtual Kathak training can still be successful. I am proud of the progress these students have made in just 1.5 months of zoom classes. 😊👏

We have to thank Bollywood for giving us so many songs with the perfect Kathak beats and the mood of a Thumri. All of the songs selected for this workshop involve Lord Krishna with his typical 'Ched Chad of the Gopikas!' I will be teaching the Mudras and postures that depict both Krishna and the Gopikas. The workshop will also focus on Abhinaya or facial expressions which is a critical element of all Kathak Thumris.

I will be doing a traditional presentation in Taal Teentaal. When I say traditional I mean, talking to the audience and explaining the bols and then dancing and showing what was recited. I will also present a Thumri on Lord Krishna this evening.

You have won half your battle if you just stand smartly. As soon as you take your position on stage, the audience has already judged you by the way you stand. They have already decided, this doesn't look promising. But if you stand smartly, with straight shoulders, strong hands and most importantly eyes that convey that you care, that will get you the audience's attention. You will have them convinced that your performance is going to be worth their time.

This is all the more important with today's audience who can't get enough of their phones. How do you get them to keep their phones aside and look at your dance? Start by simply standing smartly as soon as you have entered the stage. Don't wait for the music to start. Bring on those meaningful eyes even during the silence before the music starts. And then of course dance beautifully also! 😉
