'Please come down to earth and get bowling': Sachin Tendulkar to India pacer on debut; 'I was really down'
The great Sachin Tendulkar has always been an inspiration for the entire cricket-crazy nation of India and his ways have always rubbed off in the right way. Through his 25-year-long career, Tendulkar made the transition from being the junior-most member of the team to a legend. The likes of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin – all of whom made their India debut when Tendulkar was at his peak – are still going strong, but at the same time, there've been a few who faded along the way. One such example is speedster Varun Aaron, who recently announced his retirement from red-ball cricket at the end of Jharkhand's Ranji Trophy 2023/24 campaign.
Aaron, a tearaway pacer who first grabbed headlines in 2008 for his raw pace, couldn't play for India as much as he would have loved to but had his time with the Indian cricket team. He made his Test debut for India against West Indies in November of 2011, where after a lacklustre start, Aaron ended up picking three wickets… all thanks to Tendulkar, even if it required the Master Blaster to show some tough love.
"We were playing at the Wankhede Stadium. It was a really flat wicket, and the West Indies were 500 something for four. And I was really down. I was 21 years old and had never bowled 21 overs without a wicket. Sachin Tendulkar was standing at mid-off, he looked at me and asked, 'why are you looking so down?' I was like, you know what, Paaji, I've never bowled 21 overs for no wickets.
I can't believe this is happening on my debut. He's like, come here. We stopped mid-over and he said, 'Do you know I waited 22 years for my first World Cup Trophy? So you can wait 21 overs for your first wicket, there's no problem with that. Please come down to earth and get bowling," Aaron said in an interview with the BCCI.
And that's when everything made sense to Aaron. After going three spells without a wicket, the speedster dismissed the well-set Darren Bravo for 166, getting him to edge to captain MS Dhoni.
In a span of the next four overs, Aaron cleaned up Charlton Baugh and then removed Darren Sammy to trigger a mini-West Indian collapse, who from 518/4, got all out for 590. It was the same drawn Wankhede Test in which Ravi Rampaul dismissed Tendulkar for 94, but as Aaron mentioned, Tendulkar to him, in that game, was more than just his batting.
Tendulkar's advice lit a bulb in Aaron's mind
"I was like, Man, seriously, that makes so much sense. The very next ball, I got Darren Bravo (166) out, caught behind. Then got two other wickets - Carlton Baugh and Daren Sammy. And that just changed my debut. Just a few words from Sachin Tendulkar. I had also induced an edge off Marlon Samuels, but it was dropped," Aaron added.
"I was bowling flat out, gas out in my 26th over. If I had gotten that wicket, you never know, I would've gotten one more over from MS Dhoni and may be a fifer as well. It was just a great spell inspired by the great Sachin Tendulkar. And it just shows you that these very small things can actually change careers, change a debut for somebody."
Unfortunately, injuries cut short what had the promise to be an impressive career for India. Aaron played 9 Tests and 9 ODIs between 2011 and 2015 before falling behind in the pecking order and never to return. Aaron was set to feature for India in the 2011-12 tour of Australia before the recurrence of the back stress fracture sidelined him for over a year.
Furthermore, the emergence of Kohli as captain and the Indian team moving towards a fresher direction in giving the likes of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma a longer run Tests. With time, Aaron's appearances were limited to First-Class and List A matches, as India became a potent force in fast bowling during the Kohli and Ravi Shastri era.
nurturing child's love for art and creativity
Art is an important part of expression for human beings. It transcends the language of words and allows us to connect with our emotions and through process. Art has the transformative power for young minds to ignite creativity, self-expression and imagination, which are very essential for children's holistic development.
" Parents play a crucial role in nurturing their child's love for art and creativity. By providing them with the opportunities to explore art in its various forms, parents can help their children to open up the door to the world of possibilities and help them discover their unique artistic talents," said Krish Nawal, Co-Founder, Children's Art Museum of India.
Here are some tips to help you foster love of art in your kids:
1.INTRODUCE ART FROM AN EARLY AGE
Allow your children to explore their artistic side from an early age only. Help them to know more about artistic expression by creating opportunities for them where they can get familiarised with the art world.
Take them to museums and art galleries to see the works of the greatest artists and get inspired to raise the artist inside them. You can also enrol your children in art classes or weekly workshops for expertise involvement.
2.MAKE ART A PART OF YOUR HOME
Creating a dedicated space for art related activities can really help in evoking interest in art in children. Stock up art supplies for children and let them go wild with their imagination on canvas. Keep the space open and easily accessible so that whenever they feel inspired, they can use their artistic expression to demonstrate how they feel.
3.ENCOURAGE EXPERIMENTATION
Art consists of a variety of mediums, from painting on traditional canvas to digital art. Do not limit your child's creativity to a particular medium.
Let them explore and experiment with different mediums and techniques until they find what interests them the most. This will help them to learn a variety of techniques while finding expertise in particular mediums.
4. INCLUDE ART IN FAMILY ACTIVITIES
Incorporating art activities in family bonding times can be really helpful. Creating a supportive and creative environment for children can help them to express themselves more comfortably. Enjoy these activities with your family on weekends to bond with each other.
5. FOSTER A GROWTH MINDSET
Encourage a growth mindset in your children, making them understand that artistic skills can be developed with time and practice. Help them correct their mistakes and learn the right techniques. Take mistakes not as failures but as opportunities for learning and growth.
Keep in mind, the goal is to enjoy the process and not create masterpieces. Help your children in their journey to express themselves via art. By providing an enriching environment, you can help them to ignite their passion for creativity and discover the joy of artistic expression.
Learn to challenge your balance with a fun workout from Shilpa Shetty Kundra
There is always the inspiration coming from the best. Who else than actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra? The Sukhee actor took to Instagram recently to share a glimpse of a few stretches that challenged her core balance. "Give me any “RAMP “ and I will make it my OWN. Sab Balance ka khel hai ! A great leg workout in style. It took me a couple of tries to get the whole drill, but it’s challenging and really works the quads and glutes..," said Shilpa.
The exercises performed are single-leg front squats (pistol squats) and a variation of one-leg squats. "These exercises are done to achieve good muscle-brain coordination and to improve balance," said Dr Udit Kapoor, orthopedic surgeon, Metro Hospitals & Heart Institutes, Faridabad.
Taking a cue from her fun leg workout for the day, we decided to learn why such core balance is worth your time.
Experts suggest that weak core signs include persistent lower back pain, poor posture, and difficulty balancing. "Muscle imbalances, limited range of motion, and fatigue during core exercises are common," said fitness expert Garima Goyal.
"Recognising these signs emphasises the importance of incorporating core-strengthening exercises into your routine for improved stability, reduced pain, and overall better functionality," added Goyal.
Dr Akhilesh Yadav, associate director, orthopaedics and joint replacement, Max Hospital Vaishali said that core strengthening is achieved by using core muscles, such as the lower back, obliques, and abdominals, to keep balance while performing activities. Such exercises help improve stability help people recover from injuries and even prevent them.
"It improves flexibility too as it helps in enabling a wider range of motion during stretching and exercise," said Dr Yadav.
What to do if you have a weak core?
Incorporate targeted exercises like planks and leg raises to address a weak core. Goyal said in an earlier interaction that one should include activities such as Pilates or yoga for core engagement, flexibility, and posture improvement. "Cardio exercises like walking and cycling contribute to overall fitness: Emphasise balance training and functional movements in your routine. Maintain proper posture throughout the day, and seek guidance from fitness professionals for a personalised plan," Goyal mentioned.
What to keep in mind?
Experts assert that performing exercises with the intended muscles actively involved ensures that you are effectively targeting and strengthening the desired areas. "This not only maximises the benefits of the workout but also reduces the likelihood of compensatory movements, which can place unnecessary stress on joints and ligaments," said Goyal.
Rahul Dravid's Son Samit Emulates Father's Delightful Cut Shot, Video Goes Viral
Rahul Dravid's son Samit stole the show during his brief knock in the two-day warm-up match between the Karnataka State Cricket Association XI and Lancashire County Cricket Club in Bengaluru.
This was after a video clip showed Samit executing his father's trademark cut shot. The shot, known for its elegance and precision, mirrored Rahul Dravid's batting style, and it was no surprise that when it quickly went viral on social media.
For the uninitiated, the cut shot was a signature stroke associated with Dravid's batting. Often described as "textbook perfect," it involved minimal footwork and precise timing, allowing him to manoeuvre the ball effortlessly through the gaps on the off-side.
Samit's emulation of his father's technique sparked a lot of excitement among cricket enthusiasts.
Many drew parallels between the father and son, noting the striking resemblance in their batting styles and techniques.
However, Samit's innings did not last long, and he was dismissed for 25 off 45 balls. Whether he can carve his own path to cricketing success like his father remains to be seen.
Lancashire are currently conducting their pre-season camp before the County Championship this year.
Virat Kohli And RCB Men's Team Give Women Side Guard Of Honour As Mandhana Walks Out With WPL Trophy
In a heartwarming show of appreciation, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) men's team, including star Indian batter Virat Kohli, honored the Women's Premier League (WPL)-winning RCB team with a guard of honor at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The special gesture took place during the franchise's flagship RCB unbox event, which took place on Tuesday (March 19) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Smriti Mandhana-led outfit wore a special 'WPL Champions 2024' jersey in front of the jam-packed Bengauru crowd.
After the men's team practice session and a few performances, Mandhana walked out with the trophy from the dressing room. Before their entry into the ground, the men's, including Kohli, skipper Faf Du Plessis, and star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, welcomed them into the iconic arena with an incredible guard of honor.
RCB's triumph in the 2024 WPL is their first-ever trophy since the franchise's inception in 2008. They are one of just three founding member franchises that are still playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but have yet to win the trophy. The men's team played in the IPL finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016 but could not cross the line. They also featured in the 2011 Champions League final but were defeated by the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Talking about Mandhana & Co.'s triumph, they defeated the Delhi Capitals in the final by eight wickets with three balls to spare in the summit cash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Earlier, they knocked defending champions the Mumbai Indians (MI) out with a tense victory in a nail-biting eliminator.
RCB's triumph in the 2024 WPL marks a stunning turnaround after a forgettable inaugural season in 2008, in which they finished second last on the table with just two wins in eight games. The Mandhana-led outfit had lost each of their first five games in the competition.
Kohli, who gave them a guard of honor today, had gone to their team hotel to deliver a pep talk last year in a gesture that was widely appreciated.
The star Indian batter was quick to congratulate the team after their victory on Sunday and was spotted on a video call with the team just minutes after the final ended on Sunday.
Kohli has been the face of the franchise, having been associated with them since 2008. He was purchased by the Bengaluru-based franchise in the U-19 draft ahead of the first-ever IPL season and has remained with them ever since. Kohli is the only player to play all 16 seasons of the IPL for the same franchise.
Indian government issues a high severity warning for Apple iPhone and iPad users
CERT-In or the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, has issued a high severity for Apple iOS and iPad OS devices. The warning was issued on March 15 and is listed on the official CERT-In website.
As per the warning, multiple vulnerabilities were found in Apple iOS and iPadOS, which can possibly let someone attack the system to make it stop working, run any code they want, access sensitive information, and get around security measures.Â
The vulnerability can "allow an attacker to trigger denial of service condition, execute arbitrary code, sensitive information disclose and bypass security restrictions on the targeted system", read the CERT-In website.
The security flaw impacts iOS and iPadOS versions earlier than 16.7.6 for devices like iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad 5th generation, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation.
It also affects versions before v17.4 for devices like iPhone XS and newer, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and newer, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and newer, iPad Air 3rd generation and newer, iPad 6th generation and newer, and iPad mini 5th generation and newer.
As per CERT-In the issues in Apple's iOS and iPadOS have been caused because of "improper validation" in Bluetooth, libxpc, MediaRemote, Photos, Safari & WebKit parts. There are also privacy problems in ExtensionKit, Messages, Share Sheet, Synapse & Notes parts. Another problem is that ImagelO can get too full, and the kernel & RTKit parts can have memory mistakes. Safari Private Browsing & Sandbox have a logic issue, while Siri has a lock screen problem, and CoreCrypto has a timing problem.
Exploiting these vulnerabilities could lead to causing system failures, executing unauthorised code, accessing private information, and bypassing security measures.
You can take several steps to protect your devices from such
vulnerabilities.Â
Update software: Ensure that your Apple iOS and iPadOS devices are running the latest versions. Manufacturers often release software updates to fix security issues, so regularly check for and install updates.
Install security patches: Apply any security patches provided by Apple specifically to address the vulnerabilities mentioned by CERT-In.
Use secure connections: Avoid connecting to unsecured or public Wi-Fi networks, as they can increase the risk of unauthorized access to your device.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security like 2FA can help prevent unauthorized access even if someone gains access to your credentials.
