Misconceptions about IELTS Writing can arise due to misunderstandings or incorrect assumptions about the test format and requirements. Here are some common misconceptions about IELTS Writing:
Writing only needs to be grammatically correct:
While grammatical accuracy is important, IELTS Writing also evaluates other aspects, such as task achievement, coherence, and lexical resource. It's essential to address the given task, organize ideas coherently, use a wide range of vocabulary, and demonstrate critical thinking skills.
Using complex vocabulary guarantees a high score:
While using a diverse and appropriate range of vocabulary is important, simply incorporating complex words or phrases without clear meaning or accuracy can negatively impact your score. It's crucial to use vocabulary effectively and in a way that enhances the clarity and precision of your writing.
Writing longer essays leads to higher scores:
There is no specific word count requirement for IELTS Writing tasks. Instead, it is more important to focus on fully addressing the task, providing relevant ideas, and maintaining coherence and cohesion. Writing unnecessarily long essays may lead to a lack of clarity or coherence, affecting your score negatively.
Personal opinions are essential in all essay types:
In some IELTS Writing task types, such as Argumentative or Discussion essays, expressing personal opinions is expected and encouraged. However, in other task types, like Problem-Solution or Advantages-Disadvantages essays, a more objective and balanced approach is required. It's important to understand the specific requirements of each task and respond accordingly.
Memorizing model answers guarantees success:
While it can be helpful to study model answers to understand the structure and language used in IELTS Writing, simply memorizing and regurgitating prepared responses is not recommended. Examiners are trained to identify memorized or formulaic responses, and they assess your ability to express your own ideas and respond to the specific task prompt.
Handwriting quality significantly affects scores:
Although legible handwriting is preferable for ease of reading, IELTS examiners are trained to assess content rather than handwriting style. As long as your handwriting is clear enough for the examiner to understand your ideas, it should not impact your score significantly.
It's important to familiarize yourself with the IELTS Writing test format, understand the assessment criteria, and practice writing within the given time limits to ensure a better understanding of the requirements and avoid these misconceptions.

Quick vocabulary tip.
Try to avoid using the word 'get' unnecessarily. 'Get' is an incredibly versatile word; we can use it in so many situations because it has many meanings.
However, in most cases, it's a bit too basic for academic language. There is always another option that creates a collocation.
Here are some alternatives to get.
Get a job = Find a job
Get a car = Buy a car
Get a tv = Purchase a tv
Get money = Earn money
Get happy = Become happy
Get time = Find time/Make time
Get a degree = Complete a degree
The list of examples above is not complete by the way. There are probably close to a hundred uses of 'get' which can be replaced by a better word.
In summary, don't use 'get' in your essays. Find a different verb.
IELTS Listening/Reading tip
Capital Letters
You can write your answers in capital letters or lowercase - your choice(even a combination of both). My recommendation is to use all capital letters as it is easier to read and avoid mistakes.
For example:
car CAR
CHILD child
The line chart illustrates how much money Colombia, Japan, and Myanmar earned from exporting clothes between 1990 and 2013.
Overall, Colombia and Japan experienced similar patterns of change in terms of clothing exports. By contrast, Myanmar saw significant instability in the value of clothes exports over the span, showing by far the greatest change in amount.
In 1990, Japan exported around $580m worth of clothes in comparison with Colombia, whose value was approximately $100m less. While the figure for the latter country had risen markedly to about $650m by 2011, that of the former initially dipped and then grew minimally to $600m by the same year. During this time, however, Myanmar’s clothing exports had skyrocketed from almost 0 to a chart high of roughly $950m.
From 2011 to 2013, Japan experienced a gradual drop to just under $500m, whereas Colombia’s number slightly grew and then declined to just over $600m. In stark contrast, Myanmar’s line saw a steep fall to around $350m in 2012, before rising noticeably and finishing the period with about $440 million.
Handwritten notes on how to use 'Prefer' in a sentence.
There is a fair chance you will get a question where your preference could be asked about two subject topics. So, learn it properly.
Don't shy away from asking any doubts no matter how silly they sound.
Happy learning!!!
IELTS Writing Task 1: nouns and verbs
Charts and tables usually show nouns rather than verbs. However, you need to find the right verb in order to write a good sentence.
Don't write:
- Walking was 255 miles per person in 1985.
- Car was the highest form of transport.
Do write:
- The average person walked 255 miles in 1985.
- People traveled more miles by car than by any other form of transport.
Do you know the difference between Writing Task 1 and Writing Task 2?
Let's learn it together, shall we?!
Are you also struggling with the listening section?
1. Pay close attention to singular and plural nouns.
2. Listen closely for homophones.
3. Always check your spelling.
4. Listen intently for any alterations made in data.
5. Never leave any answer blank as there is no negative marking.
