Rendamoozham by M.T. Vasudevan Nair was a revelation. Having only known the Mahabharata through snippets in cartoons and gatherings, this book completely transformed how I view stories and the people within them. Before, characters like Bhima were one-dimensional heroes. But seeing the story through his eyes in Rendamoozham, I felt his rage, his frustration, and even his moments of doubt. It made me realize how everyone has their perspective that shapes their actions and experiences.
This new perspective has spilled over into my own life. I find myself trying to understand the “why” behind people’s actions because just like Bhima in his story, everyone has their narrative playing out. Rendamoozham isn’t just a story about the Kauravas and Pandavas from the POV of Bhima, it’s a powerful reminder to see the world through different lenses. It’s a lesson in empathy and understanding, one that I’ll carry with me long after turning the last page.
I have a story to share.
As I prepared for the day, I began with a touch of makeup, hoping to enhance my features. Yet, when I gazed into the mirror, I was disheartened by the reflection staring back at me. In a moment of vulnerability, I washed my face clean, started my skincare routine anew, and carefully reapplied my lipstick, lined my eyes, and completed my usual ritual.
It was during this process that I confronted a profound realization: overcoming the scars of childhood is a formidable challenge. I had believed myself to be beyond their reach, but they lingered still. The journey to healing is arduous and requires time. Despite this, I am proud of the courage I have found within myself, the growing confidence to face these lingering shadows, and the emerging ability to love myself wholly, imperfections and all.
Living in another country alters your perspective—freedom feels richer, earnings become more meaningful, and acquiring cherished possessions or delighting loved ones with gifts becomes an enriching experience. Reminder: Step beyond your comfort zone.
My foray into literature began with the intention of expanding my English vocabulary. English novels have provided a familiar comfort zone since 2015. But I always wanted to try Malayalam Novels, and O. V. Vijayan's Khasakkinte Ithihasam was my second attempt at a Malayalam novel, preceded by Madavikutty's Ende Kadha.
Khasakkinte Ithihasam proved to be a challenging read despite having roots in Palakkad. The old blend of Malayalam with Tamil-influenced accents presented a hurdle. Yet, the novel unveiled the captivating beauty of Malayalam literature.
I was amazed by the narrative's journey through Koomankavu, Khasak, the school, and its inhabitants. I wouldn't dare critique the literary giants who shaped Malayalam, yet the climax failed to leave a lasting impact on me. Ravi and Padma's potential life at Princeton didn't care to linger in my thoughts.
Perhaps my indulgence in fantastical literature has skewed my perception of realism. Maybe I've grown accustomed to the flights of fancy, making grounded narratives seem less appealing.
Note: My experience has reignited a desire to delve deeper into Malayalam literature. It's a chance to connect with the authors who shaped my mother tongue and embrace my heritage.
Post: Grateful for everything I’ve become. Grateful for everyone who crossed my path to make this happen. for the of mind, , and I feel.
Reminder: Get out of your comfort zone!
