The ozone layer plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun. However, due to human activities such as industrialization and the use of certain chemicals, the ozone layer has been gradually thinning over time. To address this global concern, the international community came together and established the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987. This landmark agreement aims to phase out substances responsible for ozone depletion, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) commonly used in refrigerants and aerosol propellants. The theme for the 2023 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, to be marked on 16 September, is Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone

The great poet Subramania Bharathi was born at Ettaiyapuram in Tuticorin district on December 11, 1882 and passed away on 11th September 1921 at Chennai. The 39-year old Bharathi’s passionate writings ignited a thirst among the youth to join the freedom movement. His works ignited patriotism and left indelible mark on Tamil literature. He was a Tamil writer, poet, social reformer, journalist as well as Indian independence activist. He is popularly known as “Mahakavi Bharathi”. He was the pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and is considered as the greatest Tamil literary figures of all time. His fights were for emancipation of women and against child marriage. Bharati's best-known works included Kaṇṇan pāṭṭu (1917; Songs to Krishna), Panchali sapatham (1912; Panchali's Vow), and Kuyil pāṭṭu (1912; Kuyil's Song).

National Teacher’s Day is celebrated on September 5 across India, to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a renowned philosopher and India's second President. It is celebrated to show gratitude for the efforts and service of teachers. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, in the year 1888. He was a great teacher, author, philosopher, and politician. It was in 1952 that he was appointed as the first Vice-President of the country. He was also appointed as President of India in 1962. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan received the highest civilian award in the country, Bharat Ratna, in the year 1954.
