This is a pretty comprehensive (and possibly overwhelming) guide for dark spot treatments. It just comes to show how many different treatments there are.
When it comes to treating dark spots there is nuance- it is
NOT one size fits all. Let me break it down further.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this graphic is sunscreen. You can spend all the money in the world on some awesome and expensive treatments but if you’re not incorporating sunscreen/sun protection into your daily routine then you can develop those dark spots all over again. The sun is not hyperpigmentation’s friend.

Next, topicals are great- there are so many great over the counter and prescription serums and creams with active ingredients that can help with superficial treatment. Most of these ingredients work by inhibiting different enzymes such as tyrosinase (a key enzyme in the formation of melanin), others help to desquamate the stratum corneum (peel off the top layer of skin cells), the list goes on. The one (or combo) to choose depends on the type and cause of your dark spots.

Peels take it to the next level- they are relatively quick to perform and have different degrees of downtime depending on the depth of peel.

Systemic meds like oral tranexamic acid help to treat cases of recalcitrant melasma. It is very important (for most of these treatment options really) to see a board certified dermatologist to ensure that it is appropriate for you and that there is proper medication monitoring.

Lasers and light based devices are amazing but not for everyone. They have target chromophores and the device to choose depends on the treatment target. I.e is the target red? Brown? Thick? Due to a lentigo? Melasma? Actinic damage? Tattoo? A combo of all of the above?

If you’re looking a place to start I think having a solid skin routine will set the basis for success - by solid skin routine I mean start with a cleanser, vitamin C and sunscreen in the morning, then cleanser, retinoid and moisturizer at night.
