India announces ‘Green’ Hydrogen standard :
India has announced the definition of Green Hydrogen. The Green Hydrogen Standard for India sets a criterion of 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg H2 as a 12-month average emission threshold. It is a significant move for the progress of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The guidelines established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, delineate the emission benchmarks that must be fulfilled for hydrogen production to qualify as 'Green', signifying its origin from renewable sources.

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has characterized Green Hydrogen as having a well-to-gate emission (encompassing processes like water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, hydrogen drying, and compression) that does not exceed 2 kg CO2 equivalent per kg H2.

The scope of the definition encompasses both electrolysis-based and biomass-based hydrogen production methods. The notification explicitly states that the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy will define a comprehensive methodology for measuring, reporting, monitoring, on-site verification, and certifying green hydrogen and its derivatives. Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power shall be the Nodal Authority for accreditation of agencies for the monitoring, verification and certification for Green Hydrogen production projects.

👉 Green Hydrogen :

● It is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, non-toxic and highly combustible gaseous substance.
● Green hydrogen stands as an energy resource that emerges via water electrolysis using renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.
● This form of hydrogen plays a key factor in transitioning towards a carbon-neutral economy while aiding in climate change mitigation.
● The produced hydrogen can be stored and employed as fuel across transportation, industry, and agricultural sectors.
● Other types of Hydrogen: Hydrogen can also be categorized as 'grey' and 'blue'.
● Grey hydrogen is manufactured from fossil fuels like coal and gas, constituting around 95% of total production in South Asia.
● Blue hydrogen is generated utilizing electricity produced by combusting fossil fuels; however, it incorporates technologies to capture and prevent the carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

👉Driving Factors for Green Hydrogen Development : Several compelling reasons underline the imperative to develop green hydrogen -

● Energy Transition : The shift away from fossil fuels gains momentum, and green hydrogen offers a clean energy carrier to replace traditional sources across sectors.

● Energy Storage : Hydrogen acts as a reservoir for excess renewable energy, effectively addressing the intermittency of solar and wind power.

● Decarbonizing Industries : Hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industry and chemicals find solace in green hydrogen as a clean feedstock and energy source.

● Energy Security : Diversification through green hydrogen reduces dependence on finite fossil fuels, enhancing energy security.

● Global Market Potential : The surging interest in sustainable energy presents a lucrative market for green hydrogen technologies.

● Technological Innovation : Ongoing research drives innovation, leading to efficient production methods and cost reduction.
Meeting International Commitments: Countries committed to net-zero emissions find an ally in green hydrogen, aiding their clean energy targets.

👉Applications Unveiled :

Green hydrogen finds applications across various sectors, unlocking new possibilities for a sustainable future :

● Energy Storage : Aiding grid stability by storing excess renewable energy during low-demand periods.
● Power Generation : Fuelling gas turbines and fuel cells to provide backup power during peak demand.
● Residential and Commercial Heating : Transitioning to hydrogen for space and water heating, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
● Decentralized Power Generation : Empowering remote areas with local hydrogen-based power generation.
● Aviation and Shipping : Decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors through synthetic aviation and marine fuels.
● Hydrogen Injection : Blending hydrogen with natural gas in pipelines to reduce carbon intensity.
● Hydrogen Fuelling Stations : Expanding hydrogen-powered vehicles through dedicated refueling infrastructure.
● Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) : Integrating CCS technologies for cleaner hydrogen production.
● Agriculture : Enabling sustainable practices by producing fertilizers and powering machinery with green hydrogen.

👉Conclusion :

As India embraces the Green Hydrogen Standard, the journey towards a cleaner and sustainable energy landscape gains momentum. Green hydrogen's potential to reshape industries, reduce carbon footprints, and enhance energy security positions it as a pivotal player in the quest for a greener tomorrow.

🎯 10 Facts you must know about Chandrayan-3 :

Chandrayaan-3 has been launched at 2:35 P.M. from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh carries by ISRO’s largest and most powerful rocket, the Launch Vehicle Mark III.

India aims at soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s South Pole. If this mission is accomplished India will become the fourth nation to successfully complete the soft landing of spacecraft on the Earth’s Natural Satellite. And also India will become the first country in the world to land a spacecraft on the Moon’s South Pole.

Chandrayaan-3, is all set to make a soft and successful landing on the south polar region of the Moon around 6.04pm on August 23.

👉Here is the 10 Interesting Facts about the Chandrayaan-3 :

1. Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 which aims at soft landing at Moon’s south pole. It consists of a lander and a Rover which has been launched into the space by a rocket called LVM3 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota. While the Chandrayaan-2 which was launched in 2019 consisted of an orbiter, a Lander and a Rover, because of a software glitch the craft lost all communications just minutes before it was supposed to land and later it was crashed. Though it was not a complete failure, the orbiter is still functional and provides valuable data to the organization.

2. The launcher used to support the moon lander Vikram is GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) also known as Launch Vehicle Mark III. The height of this launcher is about 5 metres.

3. The spacecraft is expected to touch down on the moon on 23 August after a voyage that will last more than 40 days. The craft is set to land on the Moon’s South Pole, where Chandrayaan-1 discovered the molecules of water and shocked the world by its major success.

4. ISRO has done some modifications to make it reliable than its predecessor. Chandrayaan-3 consists of a Lander Vikram, which is named after Vikram Sarabhai, the Rover Pragyan and a propulsion module. The weight of the Vikram Lander has been increased by 280kg from its previous version and it also carries more fuel to stay on it’s intended path to the Moon’s surface.

5. The craft collectively weighs 3,900 kg in which the weight of the propulsion is 2148 kg and the weight of lander and Rover together is 1752 kg. This total weight is close to the maximum capacity of the GSLV MK III which is India’s strongest rocket.

6. Chandrayaan-3 has three phases: the Earth-Centric Phase, the lunar-transfer phase and the Moon-Centric Phase :

● The Earth Centric Phase involves the pre-launch phase and the Earth bound manoeuvre phase which will help the spacecraft to change its directions.

●The Lunar-Transfer Phase involves the transfer trajectory phase which will help it to choose the path that will lead it towards the lunar orbit.

●The Moon-Centric Phase involves all steps from lunar orbit insertion to landing.

7. As Chandrayaan-3 safely lands on the moon, the Pragyan Rover will be deployed to explore. The Rover will be released from Lander using a ramp. This six-wheeled rover used in spacecraft is powered by solar energy and carries two spectrometers to study the composition of the moon’s surface. It will move around the landing area for about 14 Earth Days which is equivalent to one lunar day.

8. Vikram Lander used in Chandrayaan-3 is equipped with four scientific instruments. The first one is seismometer designed to detect moonquakes, the second one studies how heat moves through the lunar surface, the third aims at understanding the plasma environment around the moon and the fourth one is retro-reflector which helps to understand the gravitational interaction between the moon and the planets.

9. The lander will touch down on the moon’s surface with a horizontal velocity of less than 5 metre per second, a vertical velocity of less than two metre per second and a slope less than 120 degrees.

10. To date only three countries have successfully achieved lunar landings: the United States, the former Soviet Union and China. India aiming to be the fourth country to safe landing on the Moon’s surface and first nation in the world to land on the Moon’s South Pole.

🎯 Why Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary in news ?

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently addressed a serious issue concerning the Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Balasore district of Odisha. The NGT's intervention reflects its commitment to safeguarding the delicate balance between development and conservation.

👉 Mining Activities in the Eco-Sensitive Zone :
● Illegal mining is happening in a sensitive area of the Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary, and someone has complained about it. They are worried because this mining is taking place near a place called Similipal-Hadgarh-Kuldiha-Conservation Reserve, specifically in the Sukhuapata Reserved Forest area.

● The person who complained said that around 97 places where sand is being dug up have been given permission for this mining. They're saying that this is not allowed according to a law called the Forest (Conservation) Act, which was made in 1980. They are concerned that these mining activities could harm the environment and the animals living there.

● The person who complained also talked about a decision by the highest court in India, called the Supreme Court. This decision said that mining can only happen if they have a good plan to take care of the animals and nature. They also mentioned that an important path that elephants use should be protected as a special area.

● In simple words, people are digging up sand in a place where they shouldn't be, and this is bad for the environment and animals. The law says they can't do this, and there's a court decision that supports this too.

👉About Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary :

Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the northeastern part of Odisha, bordering the Simlipal National Park. Covering an expanse of 272.75 square kilometers, this sanctuary is a part of the Eastern Highlands moist deciduous forests ecoregion, boasting a diverse range of flora and fauna.
