This article is the continuation of last article in which we had started to get introduction about the therapies for healthy longevity. We had seen about Anjan and Nasya. In this article let's get the introductory knowledge about the next procedures succeeding Anjan and Nasya.
3. Gandush and kaval dharana are filling of mouth completely or partially respectively by medicated oils or decoctions or simply warm water. The oil pulling which is widely advised these days can be included in Kaval and Gandush. These are indicated for hygiene of mouth.
In day to day life we are very much aware about the gargling by warm turmeric water as a home remedy for the petty complaints of throat. (आजीबाईचा बटवा) This is an example of Kawal.
(It is also used by doctors to treat mouth diseases like cracking of lips, dryness of mouth, teeth disease or strengthening of teeth, hoarseness of voice, foul breath etc. These can be also used as one of the treatments in diseases like CA of mouth, tongue ect).
Kawal and Gandush are placed after Nasya as they remove the secretions (doshas) excreted by Nasya.
4. Dhumapan is indicated after Kawal and Gandush. It is the best procedure to alleviate vat and kapha dosha.(hence it is used by doctors to treat vat kapha prominent disorders of head and neck region.)
It clears the secretions i.e. doshas remained after kaval and gandush.
Plz note- Dhumpan is not smoking, this procedure includes only selected medicines, and have a definite purpose .
5.Tambulsevan is indicated after
dhumapan,which is eating betel nut leaf along with clove, camphor, nutmeg etc.
This cleanses mouth, removes mouth odour, improves taste, refreshes mind.
It mainly acts on Kapha dosha, removes excess of it.
It is contraindicated in certain conditions such as patients suffering from conjunctivitis, alcohol abusers ect. So do consult an Ayurved Expert befor adapting it in daily routine.
Here completes the list of the therapies which are very important for the wellness of shoulders, neck and head.
In Ayurved human body is considered as उर्ध्वमूलं अधःशाख i.e having the roots above (head) and branches below (extremities).
Head is the root of this body tree hence is of utmost importance. And this very importance of these organs is well understood in Ayurveda. Hence Ayurved has stated these procedures.
The topic of next article is Abhyang. This is very important topic from the health point of view. Also now a days when these massage centres and spas are on the rife, getting scientific knowledge about Abhyang is important.

After getting an overview of dentistry in Ayurved, now let's get small tips for health of head and neck region by using the openings in the area such as eyes, nose, tongue, ears etc.
Actually these are not tips,these are therapies for healthy longevity.
So the order is that, after brushing,
Anjan Karma (अंजन कर्म)
⬇️
Nasya(नस्य)
⬇️
Kawal/Gandush (कवल/गण्डूष)
⬇️
Dhumpan (धूमपान)
This order has a significance and has to be maintained. These procedures are meant to alleviate the vitiated vat and kapha dosha by excreting them in the form of secretions. The secretions produced by preceeding karma are excreted by the succeeding one. Hence the order.
Let's understand in today's language.
Any infectious microorganism mainly enters the body through mouth and nose, also through eyes and ears in some cases. If these entry points are strong and stout, the infection is taken care of at the entry point only.
This is the reason, Nasya (nasal drops) is recommended by Ministry of AYUSH for immunity building in this COVID Pandemic.
Moving one step ahead, I will recommend all these therapies for our stronger immunity for any coming health calamity.
Let me introduce one by one.
1. Anjan is all time benificial for eyes.
Now many of us will ask what is Anjan?
Anjan is an eye application which is specially prepared for a special purpose.
Let's understand-
Vat, Pitta, and Kapha are the Tridosh in our body. The eye is the Pittadosh dominated sense organ, and it should be safeguarded from Kaphadosh. This is perfectly done by Anjan Karma. It removes the toxins and cleans the eyes. It enhances the beauty as well as health of eyes.
A good quality Kajal is also a form of Anjan.
2. Nasya is simply nasal drops tobe put daily in nostrils.
(Although here nasya karma may sound simple procedure , there are many different types of nasya depending upon dose of the medicine, condition of the patient, and these are to be done under strict medical supervision. only the one which is mentioned here is to be done by daily by self.)
The organs in the upper body ,the shoulders,the neck, the face become substantially strong, skin becomes radiated. Hair fall and greying ,wrinkles and blemishes are also prevented.
(Now a days, cosmetics are on the rife in the world of making yourself presentable. If we can prevent hair and skin issues by this simple procedure, it is worth giving attention. Right??)

After शरीरचिंता and शौचविधी, we will throw light on dental care according to Ayurveda.
Ayurveda has peculiar and unique attributes towards dentistry.
Accordingly to Ayurved, teeth have it's root in asthidhatu and are called as Ruchakasthi.
( Associated with taste). Hence the dental treatment in Ayurved is also peculiar.
This platform is to explain how to conserve health, so we are going to emphasize on protection of teeth and prevention of dental problems.
Let's comprehend:
Ayurved advises to brush in the morning and after having the food. This process of brushing is called
Dantdhavan Vidhi.
For brushing the teeth, small wooden sticks of trees like arka( रूई), nyagrodh ( वड ), khadir ( खैर), karanj(करंज) , kakubh ( अर्जुन सादडा) or trees which are kashay, Katu, tikta in taste should be used.
Nimb (कडुनिंब) is well known for this purpose.
How to use?
First wash the stick properly, then bite it at one end, the taste is felt in the mouth. This converts the stick into brush and also give the benifits of the good properties of the plant .
The precautions to be taken are-
• The stick should be of width of the small finger of the person using it.
• The length of the stick should be 12 angul. (almost 9inches)
• It should be used in such a way that it should not harm the gums.
Also there are some contraindications for brushing. Are you surprised to hear this?
Yes. We should not brush if having following complaints-
• Indigestion,
• Vomitting or nausia
• Cough and asthma
• Fever
• Bells palsy
• Abnormal thirst
• Mouth ulcers
• Heart disease
• Any ear, nose, throat (ENT) disease
• Disease related to head.

This is the Granthokta knowledge.
Now we will see the relevance in today's context.
• First question arises in one's mind is , where we will it get these sticks, specially in cities where it is hard to find these trees?
Now a days many malls are keeping these sticks, or one can order online. Also by putting little effort we can find one tree and get the sticks. Also we can store these sticks easily.
The properties of these trees are such that they strengthen the gums, removes the decay if any, cleanse the teeth as well as mouth and tounge.
One can also contact there Ayurvedic Doctor for authentic dental scrub (दंतमंजन) .
• Any toothpaste cannot be prepared without chemicals such as Fluoride,Triclosan, Saccharin, Aspartame, parabens, Sodium lauryl sulphate and Sodium laureth sulphate etc.
One can just Google for ill effects of these chemicals. These are increasing the dental problems instead of protecting them.
• Though eruption of teeth is a 'after birth phenomenon', it's health surely depend upon heredity as well as गर्भिणी परिचर्या, (which is the unique regimen explained in Ayurveda for the well being of mother and foetus.)
Here lies the answer to growing teeth problems among children.
Most of the parents have to visit the dentists very often for this reason. So the roots goes to the prepregnancy period, when the couple should do बीजशुद्धी (peculiar procedure in Ayurveda to be followed by couple to be conceived) and during pregnancy the mother should follow गर्भिणी परिचर्या.

In the last article we had decided to get up at Brahm Muhurt. And by now we know all the benefits of it.
Use the 21/90 rule to make it a pakka habit. It takes 21 days to create a habit and 90 days to create it a lifestyle.
So percieverence is the key.
What is the first thing to do when we get up?
• Contemplation of Health-
(शरीरचिन्ता)
Many self help books teach us the importance of gratitude and how we should thank Mother Earth and all the other constituents of our life.
In the similar way Ayurved asks us to think about our body / health when we get up.
• How is my health?
• Am I doing good for my health?
• Or what good should I do for my health?
The body is the miraculous machine comprising brain and soul. This is truly a God's gift to us.
Thought for introspection:
If our car deserves periodic maintainance and insurance, so does our God gifted body. (by Rasayan, Panchakarma, Yog and Pranayam.)
So if we are aware of how we are directing our health in every passing day and night , if it's in wrong way, we can immediately divert the path. And this will save us from the future grief of disease and unhealthy life.
Let me explain with an example.-
If a young *pittprakruti* person is having oily, spicy food everyday, he later suffers from greying of hair.
Had he been aware of his *prakriti* and known that pittaprakriti person is more prone to greying of hair, he would have avoided such food and wouldn't had to suffer from this.
So शरीरचिन्ता do not really mean being stressed about your health or body, it means giving a serious attention.
• Process of defication
(शौचविधी)
After this शरीरचिन्ता, there should be immediate natural call for defication for a healthy person, within few minutes of waking up.
If not, the food taken in the last night is not digested or else a medical advice is needed, if this is happening since long.
Otherwise, this minor complaint if continues for long time, can turn into a major disorders like diabetes, heart issues, blood pressure ect., which we call lifestyle disorders.
We don't even realise that these disorders are repurcussion of bad defication habits. We are just wondering about the cause of the disease.
Hope that with this knowledge we get the insight about this very important health habit.

( ब्राह्म मुहूर्त )

In the last article we have decided to invest in our health which just takes little discipline and efforts. That means we are focusing on स्वास्थ्यरक्षण!
Let's see the elaboration pointwise.
How do we begin our day?
How we feel everyday when we get up?
Do we feel energetic and full of enthusiasm?
Or feel heavy...lazy?
Let's begin noting down all these feelings and perceptions to gain awareness about our health practices.
Now we will see what Ayurved has to say about getting up in the morning.
ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते उत्तिष्ठेत् स्वस्थो रक्षार्थं आयुष:l
Which means a healthy person should get up 96 minutes (approximately one and half hour) before the sun rises which is called Brahm muhurt.
If we tune our bodys' biological clock to the Sun, it is the best thing we can present to ourself.
So the thumb rule is
Work when the nature is working and slow down when the nature does so.
So if sun rises at 6 am (may be in summer ) Brahm Muhurt is 4.30 am and if it rises at 7.15 am (may be in winter) Brahm Muhurt is 5.45 .am.
Benefits of getting up early-
1. This Manohar muhurt is the 'vata dosh kal' predominated by apan vayu which performs the function of defication in human body. Thus getting up up early allows easier passage of stools.
2. Fresh body results in fresh mind for the whole day.
3. ब्रह्म (Brahm) is knowledge, intelligence, enlightenment. So ब्राह्म मुहूर्त (braahm Muhurt) is the most suitable time for studies.
(In today's language, at this time, the wi- fi of our brain is most efficient resulting in faster downloading i.e. memorising and understanding.)
4. Goal time - We get ample time for all those activities which we always wish that we could do this.
Eg exercise - for which we always give an excuse of time constraint.
Now you have a long day to plan.
So lets make an effort and start waking up early, although important part is that we should sleep early to complete our adequately needed sleep.
In Marathi there is an anecdote
लवकर निजे लवकर उठे, त्यास आरोग्य सुखासंपदा लाभे.
This anecdot will be literally true for all of us if we start practicing getting up early.!!

We are known to this anecdot since edges. But perhaps we have been able to understand this only in this COVID Pandemic!
Being healthy, conservation of health, immunity building are the key words in this scenario.
So I am going to talk about this in detail here.
The primary aim of Ayurved is
स्वस्थस्य स्वास्थ्यरक्षणम्
i e maintenance of health in healthy ones.
For this,
Ayurved focuses on
Diet - आहार.
Daily rules to follow (exercise, sleeping patterns and habits, eating times, duration between two meals, contents of diet etc)- दिनचर्या.
Seasonwise rules to follow (changes to follow in daily regimen during perticular seasons.)- ऋतूचर्या.
Yog -Asan and pranayam.
Thus If we are able to lead our health life in the disciplined manner , we are going to enjoy healthy long life for sure!
And even after following these rules if one falls ill then the secondary aim of Ayurved is
व्याधितस्य विकार प्रशमनम् .
Then comes the treatment part!
This includes three pronged actions-
*Correction in the mistakes in the daily regimen of the patient.
*Diagnosis of the disease.
*Treatment by Medicine and Panchakarm.
Thus now we are well acquainted with the aim of Ayurveda.
In today's millennia we plan everything, financial matters, education of kids, retirement etc .
Let's plan our health also.
Let's invest in health which takes just a little time and efforts.
Let's try to implement the rules to maintain health in our lives together by sharing our knowledge and expertise.
Let's travel the journey towards HEALTH FOR ALL.
