We’re all aware of different genres of influencers in the category like lifestyle, fashion, finance, auto, etc. And all these influencers have a defined category name like lifestyle influencer, finfluencer, petfluencer, food vloggers, and Gen Z. mainly dominates this. Still, a certain age influencer group is taking inspiration and creating an audience for themselves called ‘Granflunencer’.
Yes, Granfluencer as a category doesn’t have any defined age group but usually lies in the 60+ age group. They’ve created a niche audience across most genres like fashion, food, fitness, comedy, etc. Most brands work to get attention from this group and have a marketing budget to spend to acquire this user group.
Granfluencer is showered with love by the audience; I have seen on multiple occasions that audiences in the comment section demand their influencer to bring their parents or grandparents, mostly to roast the main influencer or support it to share their life learnings. Brands also demand to collaborate with granfluencer to get high engagement.
This is our take on granfluencer as a category. It's really good to see our elder generation is becoming tech-savvy and willing to learn and catch up with Gen Z. There was a time when people used to get excited about period drama movies or Hindi cinemas. Movies and series like Mughal-E-Azam, Umrao Jaan, Gandhi, or the new era ones like Scam 1992, Raazi, etc. But it looks like AI will take care of our period drama entertainment as well as your desired ideas.
Yes, creators on TikTok in the USA and other parts of the world are making content on history with the ‘What if’ genre. For example, ‘What if India was never a British colony’, ‘What if India ruled the world’ etc. Influencers use AI to keep audiences hooked with their content based on the ‘What If’ genre.
One must be wondering this must be a difficult task to get going with this type of content where you have to make creatives opposite to the facts. But it’s not; a basic prompt is given to ChatGPT or Bard to prepare a script on an imaginary history scenario, and yes, the tool serves what you want. Regarding the images for this, Dall-E serves you images on these alternate history scenarios.
And not only for TikTok but more documentary-length movies are made on this alternate history. I watched a series named The Man In the High Castle a few years back on prime video; it was based on the novel by Philip K. Dick where the storyline was ‘What If Allied Forces would have lost WW2 and Japan & Germany was the power centre of the world’. Looks like now we don’t have to wait for this sort of gripping storyline anymore.

This weekend our team at Unravel Media analysed the 1Q’23 Earning Report of one of the world’s largest advertising companies, i.e. Meta. We were sharing here the top 5 insights drawn from it based on user and audience.
1) Mark Zuck shared that over 3 billion people worldwide use one of their apps daily. These popular family of apps are Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, etc.
2) Facebook maintains 200 million DAU in USA and Canada after the last quarter. USA and Canada are 2nd largest for Meta in ARPU growth, with the Rest of the World leading the growth ARPU chart.
3) Reels continue to be the growth drivers for Facebook and Instagram, and as stated in the report, more than 2 Billion reels are shared daily. This was close to 1 Billion when they presented last year, which means overall app engagement is growing with an increase in market share for the Short Video platform.
4) AI here leads most of the work in discovery engines, reels and Ads. More than 40% of the content we consume on Facebook and Instagram is suggested to us by AI. AI recommendation of reels also resulted in a 24% increase in time spent on Instagram.
5) Paid messaging on WhatsApp has grown by 40% quarter-over-quarter; most of its users are SMEs based in South East Asia and Latin America. The number of Ads Impressions grew 26% YoY while the average price dropped by -17%.
This concludes our learning here, and we are amazed to see such numbers while we were considering that Meta is not growing and the likes of Tiktok will make them irrelevant. Happy to discuss OTT Advertising, ecommerce, D2C, or influencer marketing in general.
We'll be aware of the rise of K-Pop in our surroundings, whether it's around Make-up, lifestyle, fashion, sneakers, cuisines, drama, music, etc. South Korea is planning and trying to attract tourists from around the world. KTO (Korea Tourism Organisation) Director for India said in Feb 2023 that it aims for 150,000 Indian travelers in 2023 and 500,000 by 2026.
Korea's entertainment industry played an important role in raising this level of awareness around the world for its culture and traditions. On Netflix, Korean shows like Squid Games and The Glory saw a huge worldwide viewership. The Korean music industry, led by groups like BTS and Blackpink, is nowhere behind in attracting global eyeballs.
Observing this massive rise in the popularity of Korean Entertainment, Netflix committed to investing ~$2.5 Billion in the next 4 years. It can be assumed that more money will flow into Korean Entertainment from across the globe. Indian players like JioCinema, Hotstar, etc., may also pour money into K-Drama to grab Indian audiences.
We are excited for this to pan out on a scale and see what shape it takes to support the other dependent industries like luxury fashion, tourism, creator economy, etc. Let's hope we don't get carried away in binge-watching Korean shows. We're aware of the rise of Video streaming in the form of OTT, Short Video, Live Streaming of (Sports, Gaming and Creator's content), etc. But another form of content consumption rose during that time, and YouTube has separate category creation.
We're here talking about Audio Streaming in the form of podcasts or audiobooks. Recently Spotify said they're bullish on Indian Market, and this shows as they're investing in onboarding exclusive creators/celebrities. Spotify is the leader in Indian Music streaming and leads with a 26 % market share.
YouTube also saw this opportunity, and YouTube Studio has a separate category for uploading Podcasts. We don't have the exact number, but it's found from most of the creators that their audiences prefer Video podcasts over Audio ones. One of the additional benefits of this would be that podcasts on YouTube will also be available for Audio on YouTube Music.
