Another new year is on the horizon. More goals, plans, and strategies for many.

Amidst these, I find myself reflecting on life’s uncanny ability to throw unexpected challenges our way. The road to health particularly, can be rocky at times.
Through long experience, I’ve come to firmly believe that our attitude and approach determine how well we cope with them. If at all.

In a world where planning and strategizing are emphasized, I often wonder about the power of .
Are we taking those daily steps for positive change, or merely discussing and planning?

Having worked with incredible individuals overcoming critical illnesses, I've repeatedly witnessed extraordinary resilience unfurling through the transformative power of action; the power of showing up every day and taking action no matter how small.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴?
𝗜𝗳 𝗻𝗼𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁?

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: You cannot bring your best self to the table without robust health and well-being; without feeling good about yourself in all aspects.

As you plan for your future in work, family, finances, …whatever, I sincerely hope you prioritize action—especially for your health and well-being.

After all, what is life if not lived to its fullest potential?

As the year concludes, take a moment to ponder.

May the new year be one of commitment to action.

Time and experience are the greatest teachers. True that. As I bid adieu to 2023 and look ahead to the upcoming one, here are a few lessons that got reinforced for me, yet again:

𝟭) 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 '𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴' 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱. In life, and at work.

📌'Inspired' should reflect a state of being not bouts of being. It requires constant inner work and showing up for self, even when the going is not good.

𝟮) 𝗕𝗲 𝗬𝗢𝗨. 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝘂𝘁𝘀. It feeds, as much as it requires, integrity and authenticity.

📌Be genuine. The world will adjust.

𝟯) 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. Seeking change doesn't mean being impetuous; it implies doing a deep dive to explore growth and alignment.

📌We evolve with accumulating learnings and experiences.
At least, that's the hope!

𝟰) 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀. There's no right or wrong age for dreams. So dream audaciously and vividly. Then give your 100% to achieving them.

📌Dreams are the glitter that add magic to life. We all need some magic. I do!

𝟱) 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘁. Accepting this is not failure or defeat.

📌It's a (challenging) practice in grace.

𝟲) 𝗔 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳.

📌This gift cannot be bought. It requires daily assembly.

𝟳) 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. The weight you relentlessly carry (often unconsciously) on your shoulders should rest below your feet.

📌Check in with yourself often - your thoughts, beliefs, and conditioning.
Be your best friend.

What are your learnings?

What would you like to shed and what what would you like to retain?

𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗲: Healthy employees are happier and more satisfied with their jobs, leading to a positive and productive work environment for everyone.

Who hasn't experienced long, stressful days, esp. at work?💥

While the debate rages on how long is 'long', stress doesn't wait to seep in and often becomes permanent.

Here are 4 simple tips to help one cope better with such days:

🏃‍♀️1) Move. Micro workouts and active breaks at regular intervals provide physical and mental benefits. Sitting long hours suits neither the body, nor the mind.

🍎2) Watch out for stressful eating. Binge and/or erratic eating sabotage in the long run. Just a little bit of planning and mindfulness can steer you towards healthier eating.

🪑3) Set up your workplace to suit your body at work - aka ergonomics. Check height, angle and support of table, chair, laptop etc.

🧘‍♀️4) Energize with body-mind connection practices. They add immense value. These can be done easily where you are and provide instant relief and help refocus.

Illness impacts physical health, for sure.

It also negatively impacts mental health.

The more serious and chronic the disease, the more corrosive the impact on the mind, along with the body.

Fear, anger, frustration, despair, sadness, anxiety, depression….are common.

These not only mess with one’s mental health and peace, but unchecked, reduce the will, and strength of coping and recovery.

Retaining and building mental and emotional resilience is challenging in such settings, no denying. But it is vital for better, stronger disease management.

It is important for the person with the disease, as well as their caregivers.

There are different ways of building a stronger mindset.
There is no one size-fits-all solution.

Explore options. Seeking professional help should not be taboo.

Don’t let your disease define you. 😊

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Today is World Osteoporosis Day.

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by severe loss of bone density, which leads to porous, thin and brittle bones, greatly increasing risk of painful fractures. Most of these are fractures of the hip, wrist and spine.

Worse, it is a "silent disease" - meaning you may not notice changes happening till you fracture a bone.

There are steps you can take to prevent osteoporosis from occurring and/or managing it better. Treatments can also slow the rate of bone loss if you have osteoporosis.

It helps to know what these steps are.

Exercise and diet play an important role in all stages.

Here 👇are some symptoms and risk factors to watch out for, important tips on exercising with osteoporosis, and precautions to follow.

With increase in life spans, aging populations and compromised lifestyles, prevalence of Osteoporosis is a major public health concern worldwide. According to some estimates, more than 200 million people are affected by osteoporosis!

So, being in the know and taking timely, well informed steps is warranted.

Save and share with family and friends.

A Cancer diagnosis is daunting. Further, terms can get confusing adding to intimidation.

Here are some commonly used Cancer terms simply explained, to help one understand these better:

📌Primary Cancer:

This is the original site (organ or tissue) where the cancer begins. The cancer that starts here is referred to as the Primary Tumor.

For example, a cancer that starts in the breast is called Primary Breast Cancer.

📌Secondary Cancer and Metastasis/Metastatic Cancer:

Cancer cells can sometimes break away from the primary cancer site and be carried to other parts of the body via the bloodstream or the lymphatic system.

If the cancer cells settle in another part of the body and form a new tumour (Secondary Tumour), it is called Secondary Cancer, and the process is referred to as Metastasis. When this happens, doctors say the cancer has "metastasized" or may even refer to it as "Metastatic Cancer."

🌱 Although the new tumour now starts growing in a different area of the body, it is the same type of cancer as the primary tumour.

For example, breast cancer cells may spread to the lungs where they grow and behave like breast cancer cells.
This would be referred to as Secondary Breast Cancer in the lung. (It may even be known as Lung Metastasis or Metastatic Breast Cancer). The secondary cancer is made from breast cancer cells, not lung cancer cells, even though it is now in your lungs.

📌Second Cancer or Second Primary Cancer:

This occurs when a person who has previously had cancer develops a completely new and different type of cancer than the first one.

📌Cancer recurrence means the first cancer has emerged again in the same area of the body or a different area.

Always best and beneficial to seek details and clarity from your oncologist and be better aware of your condition.💡

While there can be many causes of Cancer, some of which may not be in our control, do you know that paying attention to your lifestyle choices may help reduce the incidence and risk of certain cancers?

⚠️ Yes. Among multiple risk factors, lifestyle factors rank high as contributing to the Cancer burden. A soberingly large percentage of cancers have their roots in one's lifestyle and environment (including smoking, alcohol, diet, obesity, physical inactivity, sun exposure, environmental pollutants, infections and stress) and this requires serious self-evaluation and course correction.

How can you begin making simple lifestyle choices and practices to better safeguard your health?

✅ Start by focussing on these 5 changes:

1. Eat a balanced diet 🥙
2. Maintain healthy body weight ⚖
3. Stay physically active through movement and exercise 🏋️‍♀️
4. Limit alcohol, say NO to to***co 🚭
5. Protect yourself from long exposure to direct sunlight ☀️

Prevention is better than cure, as the saying goes. Making conscious choices with respect to what lies in our control is vital in fighting the battle against Cancer and other diseases.

Last week, I was invited to conduct group and 1-1 sessions over 2 days on Wellness, Health, and Self-Care at RPG Enterprises offices, in Mumbai.

High on participation and engagement, it was a pleasure presenting to and interacting with a receiving audience, also high on awareness, self practices, and self-reflection.

It provided opportunity for a deeper dive into the topic, solution mappings for different challenges, and created a safe, non-judgmental environment for discussions of fears, inhibitions, and personal shares of inspirational journeys.

That we hit high on satisfaction and feedback on all fronts, as always, feels good. :)

Looking for effective Wellness Tips?

Here are 3 you need to practice before you go looking for anything else:

1️⃣ Focus on Basics first.

Then as often as you can and as often as required.

Do an audit of the multiple aspects that contribute to your sense of wellbeing - physical health, emotional stability, state of finances, social support, workplace dynamics etc. Figure out what is missing or needs improving, then get to work plugging the gaps.

2️⃣ Keep it Simple

Unless you are somehow convinced it makes you appear more intelligent, (debatable!) don't over-complicate, over-analyze and over-dress issues, concepts, problems and solutions. If simple solves it (quite often it does!) embrace it and move on. It will allow you to incorporate required changes in your lifestyle and promote long term adherence. That's good, that's needed.

3️⃣ Own up for Yourself

No one and nothing can help you if you choose not to take action. Remember the proverb, You can lead a horse to the water, but you can't make it drink?

Don't be that horse.

Bonus tip: Keep points 1 and 2 in mind and you will find it easier to drink.

******
Why do I choose to share these 3 tips rather than any other?
Because experience shows time and again this is where people tend to get stuck in quicksand of no action, no results and guaranteed frustration.😊

Including the ones that long to be spilled but are often held back.

The journey of isn't an easy one, not for those undergoing treatments, neither for caregivers.

It demands and requires building Physical, Mental and Emotional strength and tenacity. On a daily basis.

Beyond medical treatments, resources to build these and a supportive eco system that can help guide are still few and far between.

The work of people tirelessly engaged in trying to bridge this chasm is no mean feat and deserves full support.

Thank you Tanisa Foundation for doing what you do and for giving me the privilege of conducting sessions today on Cancer Coping and building Physical and Emotional Resilience for patients and caregivers at the Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi.

When educationists and teachers embrace Wellbeing (Physical, Emotional and Psychological) as important, they set a needed environment for children to embrace it too!

Thank you for leading the way. Honored to be trusted as a presenter and facilitator. My gratitude to the Director - Principal and Head of School, Dr. Neeta Bali, & all staff members who made for highly engaged, attentive participants in my session.

Her beautiful words and vision are reposted below👇:

" Teaching is a remarkably rewarding pursuit if one is able to enable and empower learners. However, it is also about being a confident and committed teacher with a sound balance of a healthy mind and a healthy body. We expect our teachers to innovate, continuously learn and create an engaging learning experience. At each stage, a teacher gets involved and strives to deliver to the best of his/her ability. In a performance-driven world, it becomes increasingly stressful to fulfil the demands of students while ticking all the deliverables in a limited timeframe.
Nowadays, the importance of physical and mental well-being of teachers needs to be stressed more than ever. Education or any activity that involves an exchange of knowledge should involve a consistent focus on mental and physical wellness. In this endeavour a wonderful session on the physical, emotional and psychological wellness of staff was conducted at G.D. Goenka World School and it was my great pleasure to invite our guest speaker Ms. Vaani Pahwa Bhalla - Integrated Wellness & Medical Fitness Strategist | Keynote Speaker | Classical Dancer | Creating Holistic Health & Wellness Blueprints for Global Organisations. She spoke about the connection between the psychological and physical wellness, about importance of movement and gave a great tips for improving body postures and fitness.
As a schools we must think out of the box and deliver holistic solutions that would ensure both mental and physical wellbeing of teachers. These solutions should be implemented consistently keeping their long term impact in mind."
