'MISLEADING': CENTRE DISMISSES REPORTS THAT CLAIMED INDIA MISSED COVID-19 VACCINATION TARGETS

The union health ministry on Sunday said that a recently published news article by a reputed international news agency claiming that India has missed its vaccination target is misleading and does not represent the complete picture.

So far, India has administered over 90 per cent of first dose and 65 per cent of second dose to its eligible citizens.

Further strengthening India’s fight against Covid pandemic, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has given approval to two additional vaccines in December 2021, taking the number of vaccines given restricted use approval in emergency situation in India to 8, clarified the ministry.

SMRITI MANDHANA AMONG FOUR PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR ICC WOMEN'S CRICKETER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Indian cricket Team batter
Smriti Mandhana was on Friday nominated for the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year award for her spectacular performances across all formats.

The 25-year-old right-handed opening batter scored 855 runs in 22 international matches across formats during the year at an average of 38.86 with one century and five half-centuries.

Mandhana was shortlisted for the top award along with Tammy Beaumont of England, Lizelle Lee of South Africa and Gaby Lewis of Ireland. The award is given to the best overall performer in women's international cricket (Tests, ODIs and T20Is) during 2021.

She played an important knock of 49 in India's only win in the ODI series. Her 15-ball 29 and fifty in the T20I series went in vain, though, as India fell short in both the matches and lost the series 1-2.

She made India's first-ever pink-ball Test even more memorable by smashing her maiden century (127) in the longest format of the game. The match ended in a draw and Mandhana was declared the Player of the Match.

With 872 runs in 21 internationals at an average of 48.44 with one century and eight half-centuries, England's Beaumont finished as the highest run-getter in the calendar year.

Mandhana was also nominated for Women's T20 Player of the Year on Thursday. The winner will be announced on January 23.

12 PILGRIMS DEAD IN STAMPEDE AT MATA VAISHNODEVI SHRINE IN JAMMU

Twelve pilgrims have died and 14 others injured in a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Jammu and Kashmir's Katra early morning on January 1. The stampede was triggered by a heavy rush of devotees, according to officials.

The incident occurred outside the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine on Trikuta hills at Katra in Reasi district of the Union Territory. The shrine, about 45 kilomteres from Jammu, is open for devotees round the clock. The deceased include devotees from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.

Many groups of devotees reportedly entered the Bhawan without permission slips leading to chaos, police said.

The rescue operations started immediately after the stampede and the injured were rushed to hospitals, where condition of some is said to be "serious".

Condoling the deaths, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to the stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. The injured would be given ₹50,000, Mr. Modi said.

Xiaomi and Oppo can be fined Rs 1,000 crore for violating the law, sources in the Income Tax department said today after searches across India last week, underling that inflated expenses led to a reduction of taxable profits of over Rs 1,400 crore.

These companies had not complied with the regulatory mandate prescribed under the Income-Tax Act, 1961, for disclosure of transactions with associated enterprises. The Gauhati High Court granted bail to a student of the IIT-Guwahati, accused of ra**ng a fellow student, calling him and the victim "the state's future assets".

Hearing a bail application by the accused, who is a BTech student, the court said there is a clear 'prima facie case' as alleged against the accused based on all the evidence, however, the investigation in the case is completed and thus it was not necessary to keep the accused in custody.

A prima facie case is a cause of action or defense that is sufficiently established by a party's evidence to justify a verdict in his or her favor, provided such evidence is not rebutted by the other party.

Appearing on behalf of the informant/victim, advocate S Sarma “vehemently opposed grant of bail to the accused in such a serious offence, which is against the society.”

"However, as the investigation in the case is completed and both the informant/victim girl and the accused are the state's future assets being talented students pursuing technical courses at the I.I.T., Guwahati, who are young in the age group of 19 to 21 years only and further, they are being hailed from two different states, the continuation of detention of the accused in the interest of trial of the case, if charges are framed, may not be necessary," remarked the Court while granting him bail.

The Court took into account the following factors to grant bail to the accused:

● The investigation in the case is complete ;

● Both the informant/victim girl and the accused are the state's future assets being talented students pursuing technical courses at the I.I.T., Guwahati ;

● They are young in the age group of 19 to 21 years only ;

● They belong to two different states; and

● Continuation of detention of the accused in the interest of trial of the case, if charges are framed, may not be necessary.

Lastly, noting that there is no possibility of the accused tampering with their evidence or influencing them directly or indirectly, if released on bail, the Court ordered his release on bail.
