Ariana - liberating self & others

Our long term stay at home House-support and cook has been with us for more than 3 years now, and has become a part of the family. We talk about almost everything under the sun and he happens to talk to me the most.

Recently we hired a new house-help for housekeeping support, as our earlier aunt had a baby at home and chose to stop working. This new lady was quite good at her work but within weeks we realised she remained angry and irritated mostly. This resulted in her breaking small decor items or crockery. Initially I thought she was being either careless or working in a hurry. We had few conversations too, but nothing changed.

Then one day, while I was enjoying my morning cup of tea and silence amidst my plants, I began to ponder on what the reason could be for her anger and suddenly it hit me.

Over the last decade or so, despite being in the learning and counseling field, my desire to talk or get into purposeless conversations had become almost nil. I wouldn’t have engage into small talk and wouldn’t want to talk without a need.

As I relived the last few weeks since she had joined, I realised she had tried talking to me multiple times… With my busy schedule, while I answered her questions few times, most often I would ask him to talk to our house support. This she couldn’t stand.

On pondering further I understood that she did not feel INCLUDED. Unknowingly, unintentionally, I was being biased with her. Knowing this, I decided to change my perspective and approach. I consciously paused to answer her questions. Simply began initiating small conversations like ‘did you eat’ etc. with a genuine smile and willingness to hear the response.

And without doubt, her entire approach towards the work she was doing changed… transformed. What I hadn’t seen ever with her, began happening. She was more careful, more attentive while working. She not only worked better but also began taking initiatives without being told to do something….

Yet again, the power of inclusion was proven to improve performance, ownership and quality.

Foremost, it is my dedication to the Love of my life who continues to play the most impactful role in my life.

It also is my life’s story, a very small part of it. Which took me a lot of courage and strength to write, reliving those memories again and again during the writing process.

This book also became the starting point of what I call the final lap of my healing journey. I will write about this too as I get through it to the other side.

It is often misunderstood that a relationship means 50-50 partnership.

It is not so, and it cannot be. Each one of us in the relationship, bring our own unique qualities, talents, skills, strengths, and at the same time we bring our baggages our past, our influences and our weaknesses.

As you may imagine, there will be situations and opportunities in which one person may be more adept, more capable able and available to handle things better and will take probably 70-80% of the responsibility, while the other can only provide limited support.

Now to this add another equation. Each person may not remain similarly available, capable and in their best form every single day. There will be times when they are unable to handle a situation due to other responsibilities, overwhelming emotions or something else. In such cases, it will be the other partner who would be expected to step up.

Because it does not matter who is contributing how much at a given point in time in the relationship. What matters is the sum of the whole. What the two create together is what matters the most.

There will always be times, when disagreements happen. There will be times when every thing that is being said or done by the one you love doesn’t seem right, doesn’t seem connected, or even be hurtful.

Yet, the love may remain. Don’t let temporary behaviours become permanent decision makers.

We are all humans after all. We will all make mistakes and have those moments of being vulnerable and letting our guards down. More-so with the comfort that we bring in the relationship. The comfort of being ourselves, the comfort of knowing you are not going to be judge.

So then don’t. Don’t judge them for utilising the same comfort that you have given them. In such moments, the wisest thing to do is to pause and reflect. Reflect on all the memories, all the beautiful words they may have said. All the time they actually made you feel like the top of the world. And as you do, you will realise that this moment of disagreement is indeed, temporary and let it remain so.

Have you analysed the level of impact any kind of disturbances in your relationship can have on your mind, your work, your overall state of existence and energy? Be it a relationship between parents and children, that between friends, or siblings or romantic partners, or even with our own self… relationships do form the central point our lives revolve around and any turmoil in any of these can impact us.

Having said that, also observe how many times do these turmoils actually happen due to the two people involved? Isn’t it mostly about others, or because of something else, someone else? When we think intently, we may not have any problem or concern with the person as such.

So here are my two cents, be very careful what you share about your relationship with others outside of it. The more you share, the more you welcome opinions, influences and all types of unsolicited advice. Even if it’s the closest of kins.

If you must seek advice, please reach out to professionals who will guide your relationship through the turmoil as a third and neutral party.
