This patient presented with severe anterior open bite which was both aesthetic and functional concern. She could not close her mouth without straining her mucles, constantly had dry mouth because of her inability to close the mouth.

With the understanding that there would be limitations to closing an openbite non-surgically, we decided to treat the case without surgery only with .

We use tongue tamers to retrain the tongue so that open space doesn’t reoccur.

Correcting an open bite is so satisfying 🤩😀👏👏👏..
She now has full functioning bite✅💯

We see it everyday. Parents who are watching their child’s teeth erupt, only to see the enamel hasn’t formed correctly.

Why would this happen?

Remember, when milk teeth erupt, there is another set of adult teeth growing and developing underneath the gums.

While problems in kids teeth will be stressful, and we may lose the battle, everything we do will help fortify the adult teeth of a child.

Don’t lose hope.

In the womb, a child is imprinted with signals from its mother’s body.⠀

Today we are learning how important ante, prenatal, and postnatal nutrition is to help nourish our next generation.⠀

For critical nutrients, like vitamin D, we need to remember, that it is a hormone, and acts deeply on the body, affecting how the DNA will express many years later.⠀

Strong teeth and bones, require many years of nourishment from sunlight derived vitamin D.

Babies born with vitamin D deficiency may have affected bone growth or in severe cases rickets (flexible bones). Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked with the development of childhood allergy.

A recent study indicates that children born to mothers with inadequate vitamin D levels had a greater chance of developing early childhood tooth decay. ⠀

During the study, the vitamin D levels of 206 pregnant women were analyzed during their second trimester. Only 10.5 percent of the women had adequate levels of vitamin D. Of the children born to women with lower levels of vitamin D, 21.6 percent of them had enamel defects, which leave teeth more susceptible to dental cavities. Tooth decay was found in 33.6 percent of the children born to women with the lowest levels of vitamin D.⠀

Although most pregnancy multivitamins contain 10 micrograms (400 international units), for women at high risk of vitamin D deficiency this may not be enough.

Vitamin D deficiency and dental disease is a strange one. When you think about it logically, it seems very strange that it’s not the FIRST thing that comes to mind when we see decayed teeth.

Our children need:

1) More sunlight
2) More vitamin D rich foods
3) More animal based fats

Did you experience vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy ?

Don't buy aligners online!!!!
“The approach of any company marketing teeth correcting aligners with direct to consumer approach is unethical.
This kind of minimum supervision orthodontic treatment can result in poor outcomes or permanent damage to innocent patients who get influenced by these advertisements,” says Dr Balvinder Singh Thakkar, president,Indian Orthodontic Society.
The damage could be anything from gum issues, tooth loss and loose teeth. Sometimes the damage may be detected so late that it might become difficult to repair.

Save this for reference - 3 strategies for what to do about this toward end of the caption 👇

“Sleeping like a baby” is how we describe a perfect night’s sleep—restful and restorative.

But many newborns and children aren’t sleeping well and, as a result, are missing out on that restorative sleep that lets them grow and develop to their genetic potential.

Snoring, mouth breathing, and grinding and clenching the teeth are all signs of sleep-disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea in children.

When nasal breathing is blocked, facial and dental development become abnormal.

In both human and animal studies, when nasal breathing is blocked, untreated mouth breathing leads to development of long, narrow faces with crooked teeth, receded jaw, and future TMD and headache issues.mouth breathing development

But it’s not about looks. When the jaw and airway don’t fully develop, the airway can become easily obstructed during sleep.

During the complete muscle relaxation of deep stage sleep, the muscles around the airway also relax and collapse. The airway is a tight space, often made tighter by large tonsils and adenoids in both children and infants.

If the airway becomes obstructed, the brain must bounce out of deep sleep and into a lighter stage of sleep in order to grind and clench to push the jaw forward to allow for breathing again.

Grinding and clenching are the body’s way of reopening a collapsed airway during sleep to start breathing again.

Deep sleep is the body’s chance to restore, repair, and heal from the stress of the day. It’s a time of memory consolidation and cementing learning. Hormones that control appetite and other critical functions are regulated and stabilized during this stage.

➡️ If your child is snoring, grinding and clenching, or mouth breathing, advocate for them. Don’t settle when told, “they’ll grow out of it.”

Nitric oxide is involved in a variety of systems and processes in the body such as:
🧠 Impacting memory and behavior, via nerve cells in the brain
🦠 Enhancing immunity by protecting against bacteria and cancer cells
⚡️Decreasing inflammation
😴Improving sleep quality
💪Enhancing endurance and strength
🥙Enhancing gastric motility
🍩Insulin signaling

Some helpful tips:
1) Protect the Enterosalivary Circuit: Eat a real foods-based diet. Include plenty of probiotic and fiber rich foods, healthy fats from plants and animals and eat an abundance of nitrate-rich vegetables like leafy greens and root vegetables like beets.
2) Mouth Tape: 25% of overall nitric oxide is produced in the nasal passages, and it’s imperative that they are kept moist through nose breathing.
3) Eat L-arginine and L-citrulline rich foods: L-citrulline, (primarily found in watermelons) is a precursor to L-arginine (found mostly in meats like turkey, pork and chicken, lentils, and nuts like pumpkin seeds and walnuts). L-arginine with the help of an enzyme called nitric oxide synthase (or NOS), produces nitric oxide.
4) Exercise: signals release of oxygen and nutrients and triggers endothelial nitric oxide to be released, resulting in relaxed arteries and increased blood flow.
5) Eat Chocolate: Researchers demonstrated that eating dark chocolate showed an increase in NO levels and a decrease in systolic blood pressure. Make sure it’s dark and low in sugar though…the darker the better, as it contains more of the beneficial polyphenols known as epicatechin, which act to stimulate higher levels of nitric oxide.
6) Use Nasal Spray: I use a nasal spray that contains xylitol, which helps stabilize the nasal microbiome and to keep the nasal passages moist—helping nitric oxide production. Xlear is the name of the one I use, and I use it once or twice daily or whenever I feel like my nasal passages are dry (especially when spending time at high altitude).

Did you know ?

In children mouth breathing can cause crooked teeth, facial deformities,or poor growth. In adults, chronic mouth breathing can cause bad breath and gum disease.

Identify and eliminate it !

Photos from S. Dental care sreeshma's post 12/04/2022

Awareness is the first step towards change. Let me know if you think you are a mouth breather. I will tell you what you can do to prevent/stop it.

Photos from S. Dental care sreeshma's post 11/04/2022

While mouth breathing is damaging, nose breathing had various advantages such ad -
👉 The nose act as a filter and retains small particles in the air, including pollen.
👉The nose adds moisture to the air to prevent dryness in the lungs and bronchial tubes.
👉The nose warms up cold air to body temperature before it gets to your lungs.
👉Nose breathing adds resistance to thevair stream. This increases oxygen uptake by maintaining the lungs elasticity.

Are you a nose breather or a mouth breather ?

Did you know that there’s a connection between your dental health & your fertility?

In recent times more evidence is emerging that the conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, & pre term labor which are associated with gum disease, may actually affect fertility.

❀ How is this related?

As discussed in previous posts in my hormones series, we discuss the role of the oral microbiome & the link with s*x hormones & their effect. Your oral microbiome is a living, breathing ecosystem of both good & bad bacteria living together in a harmonious balance.

When this balance of bacteria experiences phases of dysbiosis (imbalance), then it becomes compromised and as such we see an increase in the inflammatory response and a rise in infections such as cavities and gum disease.

It is common knowledge in the functional dental space that bacteria & bacterial products are not confined to just the oral cavity. Since our mouth is so densely vascular with tonnes of tiny blood vessels making up the oral mucosa, this makes it easy for bacteria to freely circulate through our body, which can cause systemic inflammation that affects organs & blood vessels throughout the entire body – INCLUDING the uterus!

❀ Evidence

Recent studies of uterine infections have seen large amounts of bacteria that is NOT present in the vaginal flora, but is evident in the mouth. Furthermore, infections of the placenta have been traced to bacteria found in the gingival plaque of the mother.

❀ Let me get to the serious point!

Our salivary glands & oral tissues have s*x hormone receptors, just like the ones found in our vaginal tissues. Wild, right?! Hormones like estrogen, relaxin & progesterone can make our gingival tissues more permeable allowing bacteria to slip easily into our blood vessel network. If you have existing gum issues or disease, then these changes are even more significant.

If you’re in the preconception phase of your fertility journey, then it’s time to visit your oral health practitioner!

Here’s what you can do to treat your sensitive teeth!

MEDICATED TOOTHPASTE ✨

Toothpaste containing potassium nitrate and fluoride is often prescribed and forms a mainstay for treating sensitive teeth. It helps desensitize the exposed nerves and strengthens teeth' enamel.

FLUORIDE APPLICATION ✨

Fluoride strengthens your enamel structure and makes it resistant to damage and decay. Fluoride gels, toothpaste, or mouthwash, may be prescribed to strengthen the teeth structure and help with teeth sensitivity.

DIETARY MODIFICATION ✨

Modifying your diet and eliminating acidic foods and liquids will help prevent further damage to the enamel. Cutting down on carbonated drinks, sugary drinks, and food will also help with teeth sensitivity.

BRUSHING HABITS ✨

If you are using a hard-bristled toothbrush or an abrasive toothpaste, it time to change. Use a soft-bristled brush in a gentle motion to ensure that the enamel does not have to suffer any damages.

While mouth ulcers are mostly harmless, it can be extremely uncomfortable and make it difficult for some people to eat, drink, and brush their teeth.
In most cases, the pain and discomfort from mouth ulcers will lessen in a few days and then disappear in about 2 weeks with no need for treatment.

For people with much more painful or frequent recurrence of mouth ulcers, following diet recommendations and home remedies may help.
