An old monk, Master Soji and a young monk, Reeka were traveling together. They came to a river with a strong current. As they were preparing to cross, they saw a beautiful young woman also attempting to cross. She was struggling to make it across, and she asked the monks for help.
The two monks glanced at each other. They had taken vows not to touch a woman. But Master Soji said, "We must help her. She is in danger."
Without a word, Master Soji picked up the woman and carried her across the river. He placed her gently on the other side, and then he continued on his journey.
Reeka was shocked. He had never seen Master Soji break his vows before. He followed Master Soji, but he was silent.
They walked for hours, and Reeka still could not bring himself to speak. Finally, he could not contain himself any longer.
"Why did you carry that woman?" he asked. "We are not supposed to touch women."
Master Soji smiled. "I set her down on the other side of the river," he said. "Why are you still carrying her?"
Reeka was silent for a moment. Then he understood. Master Soji was not referring to the woman. He was referring to the Reekaβs anger and resentment.
Reeka let go of his anger and resentment. He realized that Master Soji had helped him to see that he was carrying a burden that he did not need to carry.
The two monks continued on their journey, and they were both much lighter for it.
