लगभग 7000 से ज्यादा मल्टीपल मायलोमा वाले पेशेंट पर एक स्टडी की गई इसमें पाया गया की सबसे ज्यादा मानसिक बीमारी इन कैंसर मरीजों में होती है । Chang and Lai, University College London in the United Kingdom, ने मुख्यतः यह देखा की आत्म-नुकसान ( self -harm) और self-harm के द्वारा unnatural deaths. एक स्टडी 1998 से 2020 तक 459542 कैंसर मरीज (26 प्रकार) पर हुई, psychiatric disorders का burden बहुत है कैंसर मरीजों में, depression लगभग 98% testicular cancer के मरीजों में और सबसे कम 2.4% prostate cancer के मरीजों में होता है । और मल्टीपल मायलोमा वाले मरीज में 8.5 % देखा गया ।
और चार प्रकार psychiatric conditions जैसे anxiety, bipolar, personality disorders और schizophrenia भी प्रायः देखा गया है ।
यह सारी mental illnesses, self-harm की रिस्क को ओर भी ज्यादा बड़ा देती है।
अध्ययन के लेखकों ने यह भी पाया कि कुल मिलाकर, कीमोथेरेपी, रेडियोथेरेपी और सर्जरी प्राप्त करने वाले कैंसर के रोगियों में उन रोगियों की तुलना में मानसिक विकारों (mental illnesses) का सबसे अधिक था।
