Untouchable water: The crime of demanding basic rights. | by | LinkedIn 09/07/2021

The water woes of parched badlands like Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh has become a part of the way of life in the region plagued by poor rainfall and drying water bodies. In regions like the Itwa gram panchayat, water is scarce as taps run dry in the months of June and tankers are hired to deliver water to households. These tankers often pass by the bastis where the Chamar community reside, but the ultimate destinations of these vehicles are the settlements of the Brahmins and the Thakurs......... continued.

How does one tackle a health emergency without clean water?
How does one even begin to attempt disease prevention if one in five children imagine clean water as a luxury?

A decade from today, will water security for the next generation be a mere dream?
Given that India is home to nearly 2 crore children who suffer from high water vulnerability; the questions posed above can hardly be reduced to insignificance. Clean water is a life-sustaining resource. Communities living around the country depend on access to clean surface water and the looming water scarcity makes daily life difficult for families. A resource that some in India have taken for granted, is an unimaginable problem for many who must contend with waterborne diseases, environmental hazards and a gender-based impact that disproportionately affects women and children. Our experiences as a country in the past year has underscored the crucial need to establish an access to clean water and sanitation, particularly for those living in the most vulnerable conditions.
This is a problem without borders and while scientific solution-based proposals abound; socio-political discourse does not.

08/06/2021

While water covers 71% of Earth, 70% of rural Indian children survive without clean water.

Today we celebrate World Oceans Day. A Day that prompts us to remember a crucial aspect of our biosphere that sustains all life.

These oceans cover 70% of our planet, making it our very life source. However, did you know that 7 out of 10 rural children in India do not have access to clean drinking water. This irony certainly cannot be lost be on you...
The current state of water resources around the world is appallingly poor, but very few seem to be interested in talking about it and an even lesser number of individuals actually wish to do something about it.

Join us at Ground Blu, as we attempt to create a conversation in the hopes of bringing change now, before its too late.

Toxic Foam covered Yamuna River on World Environment Day

Yesterday, 5th of June 2021, at 5:41 PM, ANI NEWS reported that a thick layer of toxic foam enveloped the surface of Yamuna river in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area. The froth floating on the surface of the river is said to be a result of detergents containing high phosphate content.

These detergents, which are used in dyeing industries, dhobi ghats and households; are reaching the river through untapped drains. It is ironic that the world gets to learn of such dire cases of the water pollution on World Environment Day. This serves as a repeated reminder to individuals that we need to take care of the planet that sustains us.

05/06/2021

Every year on the 5th of June, the planet celebrates World Environment Day as a reminder to bring about positive change.
This year as we focus on ecosystem restoration, this theme holds a mirror that reflects how how debilitating the consequences of ecosystem loss can be in a pandemic.
As India negotiates with a mutating virus in the face of a water crisis, our emphasis should be on the use of technology as a water conservation tool to achieve sustainability. Reducing water footprint, usage of freshwater and access to clean water in the production or supply of goods and services are all part of idea of water positivity.
Indeed this idea is a lofty one. It is also a necessary one. In 2021, as we advocate for climate justice, let us remind ourselves that water is a resource key to building the blocks for disaster prevention.
