Storing solar energy with salt involves a sophisticated process known as concentrated solar power (CSP) combined with thermal energy storage (TES). In CSP systems, sunlight is concentrated onto a receiver, heating a fluid such as synthetic oil or molten salt. The heated fluid then transfers its thermal energy to a molten salt mixture, which is stored in insulated tanks.
During periods of sunlight, excess electricity generated by the CSP plant is used to heat the molten salt, effectively "charging" the thermal energy storage system. When electricity is needed, the hot salt is pumped through a heat exchanger to produce steam, driving a turbine connected to a generator.
This process allows for continuous power generation, even when sunlight is not available, providing a reliable source of dispatchable energy and contributing to a more stable and sustainable grid.
