This is the Ukata, the common persons version of the kimono. You know, jab Kimono hone ka tareeka kezual hota hai.
If you followed my stories when I was in Japan, you know Miyomi San and Yuchan San. They started off as my Airbnb hosts, but they became my family there. On Christmas when I didn’t have any plans, they insisted that I have dinner with them. They dressed me up in a Ukata, (it took Miyami San 30 mins to tie it all up).
I used to resent travelling alone, but now I realise that it allows me to make bonds with people I never would have. It allows me to love, and experience love in a way that only an idiot with a suitcase and a smile can.

I was a judge on “Global Comedian” on Nippon TV in Japan. It was an absolute blast because I love dressing up, being in Japan, watching comedy, giving my opinion like it’s super important.

Do you know how awkward it is to muscle your way through every crowd saying “sorry bhai sab, can you move aside, just need to take some pics for Instagram.” I’m just a hard worker. I had the dreadful realisation that I grew up on the internet, but I’m grateful that it was with the blogs of
who turned turned 15 years old. I hung out with MM royalty (why the fk don’t we have a pic together?), then , and I took pictures while observing that we are not jealous of nepokids we just wish we had nepo parents. Now Jinny Didi is mad at me for coming home so late and taking 20 mins to take off my make up. It’s taking 30, I took 10 more to take the last pic in this carousel. HBD . Thank you for a fantastic evening, and for the 2 seconds that I got with you to yell yelled “omg congratulations Malini.”

Bahubali but make it Jinny Didi.

In 2017, shot her first artist photograph of my face half way through a joke. It’s till date one of my fav pictures of myself on stage. I hate nearly all photographs of myself, and yet, this is one of the my favs.
Aaditi has taken many pictures of me after this one. I inherently fear cameras, but when Aaditi is behind them, I feel seen in a way I cannot explain. Whenever I do a shoot, I look out for where her lens is pointed and feel safe.
In 2023, Aaditi is shooting me on a short film as asst. DOP. I turn my camera on her for the first time in all these years, and I suddenly see her, in the same way that I feel she sees me. It’s dazzling.
I’ve been wrapped up in my own journey as an artist over the years so much, that I didn’t realise how far Aaditi has come from that picture- that the artist in her has nurtured not only the artist in me, but so many other performers. Congratulations on your journey Aaditi. And thank you for your lens, your gaze, and for the “hey, Aditis are the best” whenever I’ve been anxious about taking a picture. You’ve come such a long way, and you’ve only just begun you Goddamn magician. 📸

I did not know Matthew Perry but I knew Chandler Bing.
Chandler was the one with the heaviest emotional load in a show that was not very heavy at all. His use of sarcasm, that good natured eye-roll, that loyal friendship- it was healing, and it was protecting himself.
I think most people who do comedy (I say most I don’t know all, thank God) are in the business of trying to make people laugh because life has given them too many reasons to not laugh themselves. Chandler was the Shahrukh Khan of that genre- a man that has not been dealt the best cards, but has opened his casino to everyone else- come play and forget about the outside world for a bit.
Matthew Perry was a person dealing with so many personal issues, that he bravely shared with the world. Matthew Perry is at peace, at rest.
Chandler Bing, he lives forever and ever.

Yesterday I had a “life-comes-a-full-circle” moment when I got to interview .rege for her novel “Quarterlife.” It was organised by , a collective of beautiful, silly nerds who love reading, and who make sure that others do too.
I met Devika the first time when we were both standing outside class in the corridor punished by our respective class teachers. (Me, for something I did do, her for something she did not) We were 8 years old. It’s been nearly 3 decades since. In that time we have taken trips, talked s**t, and I have poked her about when her book is coming out. Yesterday she spoke about this book to an enthralled audience who had come to watch Devika shine. Quarterlife is about the political awakening of us- you and I, a generation that has lived through the past decade with our placards up in protest, with our heads down and eyes filled with disbelief. It’s a political book, a deeply emotional book, and because of Devika’s writing, a Goddamn masterpiece of fiction.
I am not presumptuous enough to say “I’m proud of you Devo” because your journey is yours alone, and it’s credit is yours alone, my pride in you is more about my ego. I hope you’re enjoying the hell out of this success Devo. I hope that for decades to come, the world will be as blown away with your words and intellect as we should be.
I hope to God that the “circle-of-life” of you and I is not complete yet Devo, that there will be many more times where I’ll get to watch you, listen to you, read your work and marvel- at the little girl standing outside class punished for something she did not do, and to the woman who thinks so deeply about the world around her, and interprets it for a spell bound audience.
