The international promotion of sports, especially the promotion of youth sports is a long-lasting area of German foreign policy. With football being by far the most popular sport in Germany and thus an important aspect of German identity, it is no surprise that the international promotion of football is a priority for Germany.
Even though India is famous for being a cricket-country, Germany has been active in the promotion of football in India for decades. Recent examples are the conclusion of a Memorandum of understanding between the German Football Association (DFB) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in 2015, the visit of the DFB Student-Nationalteam in 2016 and the ongoing funding of the project “Kick-for Tolerance”. In addition to that the Foreign Office intends to second a football expert to India for two years to support the Indian Football Authorities and to train football trainers nationwide in cooperation with the German Olympic Federation (DOSB).
STAIRS is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded to promote Youth Sports on the Grassroot-level with a special focus on the promotion of Football. In 2016 the NGO received the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar Award for their efforts to promote Football on the Grassroot-level by President Mukherjee.
