A computer is an electronic device that receives data from the user, processes it by performing arithmetic and logical operations, and generates the desired output. The word "computer" is derived from the Latin word "computerae," which means "to compute." The full form of computer is Common Operating Machine Purposely Used for Technological and Educational Research.

A computer comprises two main components: the Arithmetic Logical Unit (ALU) and the Control Unit (CU). The ALU is responsible for performing arithmetic and logical operations, while the CU manages the order of operations based on stored information.

There are three main categories of computers based on their method of processing operations: digital, analog, and hybrid.

Computer Generations:

First Generation of Computer (1946-1954): The first-generation computer used vacuum tubes or electronic valves. The digital computer was the primary computer of this generation.

Examples: Mark I and Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC)

Second Generation of Computer (1955-1964): Transistors replaced vacuum tubes in the second-generation computer. High-level languages were used, and ferrite cores and magnetic disks were used for primary and secondary memory, respectively.

Third Generation of Computer (1964-1977): Integrated circuit (IC) chips replaced transistors in the third-generation computer. A single IC chip could contain multiple transistors, registers, and capacitors.

Examples: IBM-360 and VAX-750

Fourth Generation of Computer (1978-1990): The fourth-generation computer used Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI). A chip with over 1,000 components embedded in it is called VLSI. Personal computers were manufactured in this generation.

Examples: IBM-PC and Apple-Macintosh

Fifth Generation of Computer (1991-present): The fifth-generation computer introduced Ultra Large-Scale Integration (ULSI) chips. This generation saw the introduction of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning.
