Halloween is a holiday celebrated
each year on October 31. The tradition originated
with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when
people would light bonfires and wear costumes to
ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory
III designated November 1 as a time to honor all
saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the
traditions of Samhain. The evening before was
known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over
time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like
trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive
gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.

celebrated across the world in the third month of the
Muslim lunar calendar. Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi is being
observed in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka
and other parts of the subcontinent today.

The history of Mawlid goes back to the early days of
Islam when people gathered to read poetry and sang
verses to honour Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet's
life and teachings, as reflected in the Hadith,
continue to influence believers. Muslims who observe
Milad-un-Nabi remember, discuss and celebrate the

Dussehra or Vijayadashmi is an
important Hindu festival which signifies the victory of
good over evil. This annual festival is celebrated
with great enthusiasm and fervour by Hindus across
the world on the tenth day of the Navratras. It is
celebrated with great joy and fervour across India by
burning the effigies of Ravana.

According to Ramayana, Ravana, who was a demon
king of Lanka, kidnapped Lord Rama's wife, Sita. He
took her to his kingdom Lanka and held her captive.
Lord Rama travelled to Lanka with his brother
Lakshman, Lord Hanuman, and an army of monkeys.
There he killed the ten-headed demon, Ravana on the
tenth day of the battle. Since then, the 10 heads of
Ravana effigies are burnt every year on Dashami. The
burning of Ravana effigies symbolises the triumph of
good over evil.

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on
October 2 every year to mark the birth anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhi. It is observed across states and
territories in India, and is one of the officially
declared national holidays.

The President and Prime Minister of India usually pay
homage at Raj Ghat, the Samadhi of Mahatma
Gandhi in New Delhi.
On June 15, 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted
a resolution that declared October 2 as International
Day of Non-Violence. The resolution reaffirms “the
universal relevance of the principle of non-violence”
and the desire “to secure a culture of peace,
tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

The story behind Teachers’ Day goes that when Dr Radhakrishan took the office of the second President of India in 1962, his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day. Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request of them to observe September 5 as Teachers’ Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to the society.

Janmashtami

Also known as Gokulashtami, this day is celebrated
to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. According
to the legends, the eighth son of Devki, Lord Krishna
was born on the 8th day of the dark fortnight of the
month of Bhadrapada.

According to the Hindu texts, Lord Krishna came into
this world as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and
destroyer of evil on this day.

Ancient Hindu literature, including Bhagavad Gita
and Bhagavata Purana, clearly state the story of Lord
Krishna’s birth and how his maternal-uncle, King
Kansa, wanted to kill him. And ever since his birth,
every 8th day called Krishna Paksha of the month of
Bhadrapada is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami.
Also, many people treat this day as an occasion to
honour the victory of good over evil.

May the blessings of Lord Krishna
always be with you and your family. Wishing you and
your family a very Happy Janmashtami!

This festival celebrates the love of
a brother for his sister. On this day, sisters tie rakhi
on the wrists of their brothers to protect them
against evil influences, and pray for their long life
and happiness. They in turn, give a gift which is a
promise that they will protect their sisters from any
harm.

The history of Rakshabandhan dates back to Hindu
mythology. As per Hindu mythology, in Mahabharata,
the great Indian epic, Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas
had torn the corner of her sari to prevent Lord
Krishna's wrist from bleeding (he had inadvertently
hurt himself). Thus, a bond, that of brother and sister
developed between them, and he promised to protect
her.

Happy Raksha Bandhan!
