The river Sharavati takes its birth at Ambuteertha near Kavaledurga (Tirthahalli taluk) and is confluenced by tributaries like Haridravati and Yennehole at Pattaguppe and Barangi respectively. The cascades at Jog Falls have been named Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket and create a magnificent spectacle in the background of green vegetation. The Raja is named after the Raja of Sonda (Sirsi taluk), who wanted to construct a temple at this spot. Roarer rushes violently to confluence with Raja. The third fall, Rocket, shoots downwards in a series of jets and the fourth fall, Rani is a silent cascade gliding over the mountain side with a sheet of foam.
The Mahatma Gandhi Hydro-electric Project, was taken up by the State Government in 1956 for harnessing the un-utilised portion of the Sharavati river. At present, besides the Mahatma Gandhi Station, power is generated at Anebayalu Hydro-electricity Generating Station which was commissioned in 1965.

The Falls can be seen in their full glory during the rainy months from July to November.
