As we remember the legendary cinematographer VK Murthy on his 100th birth anniversary today, here’s a look back some behind-the-scenes photos of him while shooting.

In the history of Indian cinematography, especially in black and white cinema, V.K. Murthy was the first person to bring in modern cinematic aesthetics to his frames and even invented a manner of shooting close-ups which came to be known as ‘The Murthy Effect’. V.K. Murthy was also known for revolutionizing film lighting in his era. When good lighting in films was about “everything should be well lit”, Murthy lighted according to the moods of the character and didn’t shy away from experimenting with his lighting scheme. He used diffusers not just to diffuse the image, but to enhance it.
