Oils and ants Do not use vegetable and coconut oils to moisturise the dry skin of diabetic lower limbs. They can attract ants resulting in ant colonies/ bites that cause skin ulcers. Always use Aloe vera Or parrafin based creams

Visit to a podiatric surgeon is essential when a callosity or corn forms on a diabetics foot. They will later form ulcer/abscess if not treated properly Please do not delay the visit or try removing it yourself.

Antibiotic beads This patient came to us as he was advised a right great toe amputation due to the severity of Osteomyelitis .We debrided the wound ,curetted the osteomyelitic bone and sent it for culture and sensitivity. We mixed the most potent antibiotic from the report with absorbable calcium sulfate carrier and made beads out of them. They were later placed in the wound and regularly dressed.the advantage of this technique is that antibiotics reach almost 1000 times their MIC values at the site without causing systemic toxicity. The wound healed well and the toe was saved .

Cellulitis or infection of skin may present as redness which is the earliest visible sign of infection in a diabetics leg. It may be associated with fever, swelling and pain which may not be severe. If neglected the infection spreads rapidly into deeper tissues. What could have been easily managed with tablets, offloading and home dressings rapidly changes into a dangerous form called necrotising fasciitis which requires injections, hospital admission and many a time surgery.
