What is Solid Surface?
Solid surface is a man made and non-porous material which provide seamless and aesthetic design for cladding surface. The surface can be made seamless to reduce the accumulation of dust and water making it one of the preferred materials for Kitchen countertops. The application for the solid surface does not limit to kitchen, it can be used in other counter surfaces such as tables, seats, wash counters, sink, wash tubs, etc. The material is capable of thermoforming to bent it to any shape as required by a trained craftsman. The colour and design of the materials can be varied according to the required composition giving them the advantage over natural stones.
Solid surface is manufactured by mixing alumina trihydrate, acrylic, epoxide, and polyester resin with powdered bauxite filler and pigments. It is also known as ‘Acrylic Solid Surface’. US based Dupont was the first to manufacture and patent solid surface under the brand name Corian in 1967. There are other manufacturers in the market after the expirations of the patent. Some of the major players are Dupont Corian, LG Hausys HI-MACS, LOTTE STARON, Formica Solid Surface, Hyundai L&C Hanex, Aristech Surface Avonite, Meganite and Mystera.
The solid surface is prone to scorch marks due to direct contacts with hot pots for the counters. The maintenance of the surface is easy but scorch marks are difficult and shall need an expert team to polish and maintain. The cost of solid surface materials comes in range from ₹ 450.00 - ₹ 1400.00. The installation cost shall range from ₹ 250.00 to ₹ 400.00 depending on the suppliers.
The suppliers will not put the adhesives in the open market, to reduce the competition and monopoly on the installation.

Rammed earth construction is one of the oldest construction technique to build a naturally beautiful, steady, Eco-friendly building with low usage of non biodegradable construction materials. Its a simple procedure using damp soil with bonding clay/cement compressed into a prefabricated form work to create beautiful dense walls. It is one of the exquisite construction technique which is fast disappearing, but there has been a revival in interest because of its aesthetics and its perceived environmental benefits. We hope we can transfer these techniques to our next generations. In Kerala, only a handful of Architects are encouraging rammed earth design constructions..
