Treasury of Tales at Indo Scottish Global School

By: Dr. Monica Khanna

Indo Scottish Global School, Kamothe held a three-day Literacy Fest from September 26-28. It was a mesmerizing experience for children who were transported into an enchanting world of books on an invisible magical carpet.

The festival opened with a show conducted by Preeti Bapat and Rinti Sen, expert storytellers and puppeteers, who led the excited children through an entire gamut of emotions using puppet-play involving action and plenty of fun.

Monica Santos, an internationally acclaimed professional clown from Spain charmed the children with her bulbous nose and wide smile, evoking spontaneous laughter with her exaggerated antics.

Usha Venkatraman, founder member of Mumbai Storytellers Society, set the stage with an energetic warm-up song, encouraging children to sing along. Eminent children’s writer and illustrator Deepa Balsavar, read aloud the story of ‘Nani’s Walk To The Park’.

Lavanya Karthik, writer and illustrator’s reading of ‘The Lion’s Feast’ had the children sitting on the edge of their seats in suspense, yet holding their sides with laughter at the ridiculously funny situations that occur when a lion comes to dinner!

More fun awaited the children in the form of engaging stories brought to life by Preeti Vyas, President and Chief Operating Officer at Amar Chitra Katha and founder of the publishing house FunOKPlease (2011). The ‘Read Aloud’ sessions from books published by them mesmerized the children, especially because they could relate to the contemporary Indian storylines.

The concept of visual harvesting was introduced to the children by Savio Masceranhas, Art Director of Ti**le Comics. He ignited the imaginative spirit of the children by illustrating how shapes could be looked at in multiple ways, and experimenting with drawings could be an exciting experience as art has infinite possibilities.

Author, academician and trainer Dr. Monica Khanna shared the art of story-telling with the children by reading from her latest book ‘Munches, Punches and Manya’s Hunches’. The enthusiastic children then created a story of their own using the tips given by the author. She also conducted a session for parents and teachers on inculcating reading habits and creative writing skills in children by stressing on the importance of including Vitamin R (Reading) in their daily diet.

The most innovative and charming aspects of the festival were the incredibly beautiful theme-based rooms that infused life in the stories that the children had only read, but could now visualize and be a part of. It was an experiential learning platform like no other, as the classrooms were converted into the world of Roald Dahl, Avengers, Panchatantra, Tenali Rama, Akbar Birbal, and Malgudi Schooldays. The children were invited to inhabit these worlds by participating in various activities in these rooms; learning and developing skills while playing games and having fun.

I m outraged n disheartened that yet after so many complications faced n awareness trying to spread, people along with the government are both acting as if they've suddenly became deaf n dumb. The global climate change has yet not showed it's utmost destruction to us so we will wait until the world is on the verge of destruction? Trees are being chopped out n animals killed. We see economy n money but wht remains unseen is the loss that we are facing gradually. This earth is so important that we now need to find possibility of existence on other planets. What sounds more paradoxical is the demand of economical growth for a future that has little to no survival rate. I have seen people go down on the roads with banners n facts to make the government realise that they alone could not save our planet. We all should be together n fight against wht we started a war with the nature -

16500 women and men who worked day and night to take to the through – the world’s first mission to the Moon’s Polar Region. It is extremely cost-effective compared to other lunar missions with a budget of INR 978 crore. Manasi Joshi is a source of inspiration to all the youngsters

By: Ishanvi Tripathi

India’s recent win in the para badminton world championship 2019 against Parul Parmer in the women’s singles SL3 category has not just bought fame to the country but also to Manasi Joshi who achieved the gold medal securing 2nd position in the world league.

Born on 11th June 1989 at Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Manasi Joshi played badminton from a very young age of 6. Her father, a retired scientist from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, encouraged her to pursue the sport. An engineer by qualification, she completed her graduation in Electronics Engineering from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, University of Mumbai in 2010. A year after this, on 2nd December 2011, she met with an unfortunate road accident. She lost her left limb after the fatal crash of the car with a truck. However, unlike other victims, Manasi stayed calm even when she realised that a disability was stuck upon her. She says that accepting her disability was more painful than the physical loss she was going through.

Manasi realised that learning to walk when you are a child is easier than learning to walk with an artificial leg at such an age. Her constant support system during this phase of re-introduction to self-capabilities, were her parents and sister. Her friends always boosted her morale to achieve what she was meant to.

Soon Manasi adapted herself to the artificial leg and started to practise badminton again with her brother. What followed next were a series of win for the girl. In 2011 just two months before the accident, Manasi played for a local tournament where she secured a gold for herself. In 2012 her victory was repeated, but this time she played it with one artificial leg. This convinced her that badminton was meant for her to play no matter what.

She represented Maharashtra at the Asian games selection trials where she was unfortunately not able to bag any position. Although many of her friends motivated her to start training in a proper institute. With practise and several failed attempts, she finally made it into the mixed doubles Para-Badminton World Championships in 2015 winning a silver medal. Despite being handicap, she enrolled at P. Gopichand badminton academy at Hyderabad for training in 2018.

Manasi Girishchandra Joshi is a fine player who has determination as strong rock and faith in herself as much the faith she has in God. She is definitely setting an example of Living life hardcore without excuses. Currently Manasi is aiming for the Paralympics Tokyo 2020 with her partner Rakesh Pandey.
