Qaisar or Kaisar Bagh was built 1848 by the last Nawab of Awadh Wajid Ali Shah. The buildings on three sides of the complex were once the quarters for the ladies of Wajid Ali Shah's harem, and then became a refuge for British residents during the Revolt of 1857. In the centre stands a magnificent white Baradari, which was once paved with silver.

Asaf-ud-Daula was the Nawab of Awadh from 1748 to 1797. One of the greatest rulers of the region, he is the man who commissioned the construction of Bara Imambara in 1784 to help his people through a devastating famine. To feed the thousands of workers who were employed on the project, rice, meat, vegetables and spices were cooked together in giant vessels that were sealed to make a nutritious one-pot meal. This method of cooking became the start of the famous art of ‘dum pukht’.

The Rumi Darwaza or Turkish Gate was used to mark the entrance to Old Lucknow, but as the City of Nawabs grew, it became the entrance to a palace, which was later demolished by the British following the Indian Mutiny.
Rumi refers to Rûm, the historical name used to denote the region roughly corresponding to Anatolia, therefore, "Rumi Darwaza" literally translates to "Turkish Gate" in English.

The much loved Galawati Kebabs were a delicious result of constant experimentation by the chefs of the aging kebab-loving Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula.
These super-soft kebabs required less effort to chew and became an instant hit with the Nawab, who at that stage had almost no teeth. Since then this Awadhi delicacy has become a favourite of all age groups.
