I landed into what could only be described as a heavily militarized zone. A scene straight out of a combat movie. There were soldiers in full combat gear everywhere. Casspir military vehicles brimming with action ready troops at every 200 meters. It was a 'war-ready' state 24/7. There was an eerie tone in the atmosphere. This Kashmir was a different one that I had been told about.

Absolutely devoid of colour, almost lifeless, barren with only shades of white, pale and grey. I watched and truly learnt during that trip. Most importantly, I understood that a lot of what is abnormal for people living elsewhere is and has been normalized for the people of Kashmir...

My love affair with Kashmir started in February of 2016. I was newly married and was visiting my husband (who was posted there), and had all kinds of butterflies flying around, even gleeing out of excitement. When people spoke to me of Kashmir it was about beautiful landscapes, mesmerizing colors, an ideal backdrop of beauty and romance...I flew over majestic snow-clad mountains and ethereal clouds. I had never seen anything so divine. The sights up there can only be described as scenes of holy transcendence.

Meet my babies. In full bloom.

This trip to Kashmir was a really special one for me as, after years of working on the Rosehip plant I finally got to see them in full bloom.

The common name of this flowering wild rose plant is the 'Himalayan Musk Rose'. These are seasonal plants and we harvest the hips/buds for our oil in winter. Timing of the harvest is crucial. We harvest our Rosehips after the first frosts has fallen and right before the snow sets in. This helps them retain more of their antioxidant value. Ruby-red coloured berries, sprawling across a blanket of white snow.

Then come April and May, all the Musk Rose bushes burst into bloom, clothing trees, running wild over hedges and tumbling precariously over cliffs and boulders. The air is heady with their scent and honeybees and butterflies have a field day.
