π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·SHARK TEETH π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·π¦·
Often times, the milk teeth don't want to fall off to make way for their permanent counterpart.
You then end up with a second row of permanent teeth behind the baby teeth, often called as 'Shark teeth' 'Double teeth' which is caused due to what dentists call ectopic eruption.
Shark teeth are very common and often require minimal to no treatment.
βͺοΈ Usually seen in kids around 6-8 years of age. π¦π©π§π§
βͺοΈ Usually seen in the lower front teeth, however can be seen in the upper front teeth as well.
βͺοΈ Occurs when the permanent teeth fail to dissolve the roots of the primary teeth
βͺοΈ The baby tooth may become wobbly but just doesn't fall out, in which case eating apples or cucumbers may come to rescue and literally keep the dentist awayπππ₯
βͺοΈ However, if the baby tooth isn't moving and there has been a history of such ectopic eruption in the past, it maybe a good idea to set up a wiggle appointment to get the little one out π¦·π©βπ¬π
βͺοΈ If checked at the right time, the tongue is usually enough to push the lower permanent teeth forward without the need of extensive treatment. π¦·π
οΈβͺοΈ The Upper teeth however don't have the capacity to self correct and should be intervened at the earliest.
βͺοΈ In addition, if the area around the baby teeth becomes inflamed or sore because the child is avoiding brushing those loose teeth, your dentist might decide itβs time for the baby teeth to come out.
βͺοΈ Itβs usually very easy for a dentist to remove the baby teeth that are impeding the complete eruption of the permanent teeth as most often than not, they are already lose.

There is a relatively new MAGIC solution which can help avoid drilling in your teeth, while preventing spread of dental decay.
It does however turn the decayed portion of your tooth Black. But as the saying goes, not all stains are bad :P :)
Can anyone guess its name??
Wishing everyone a happy Holi.!!!!!

Ever seen a layer of white gooey- slime like material accumulated on your own/ someone's tooth? This is nothing but a breeding site for cavity causing bacteria!!!!
The posterior-most teeth (last teeth) are often missed and not thoroughly cleaned.
This could be owing to lack of access, visibility, dexterity or due to sensory issues like gagging.
A thin layer of plaque which becomes denser over a period of time is the first step towards decay. If this layer is not disturbed, it becomes tenacious and difficult to remove.
This layer however can be mitigated if proper oral hygiene measures are in place.
- Adults can use a brush with a smaller head (baby brush) for the back teeth to improve ease of access.
- Brushing for infants and toddlers should always be undertaken by parents/ caregivers till such an age that they can tie their own shoelaces. This is a quick way to ensure they have enough dexterity to brush all the areas of the tooth correctly.
- This can be followed by assisted or supervised brushing.
- Introduce brushing as a habit early on.
A bi-annual visit to your dentist can help you maintain hygiene even in those non accessible areas, while providing you with solutions to keep them plaque free daily!!!

As a dentist, we have come
across statements like 'oh, dentists are very expensive'
more than once.
Yes, dental treatments can incur huge bills as they
require specialized instruments, techniques, materials
and skillset.
But having said that, dental costs can be kept to a
minimal by practicing preventive dental treatment.
That would involve you visiting a dentist every 6
months for a routine check-up and practicing good oral
hygiene at home.
During these visits if dental problems are detected and
treated early on, the added dental expense of
advanced treatment can be avoided
So in the truest sense, Waiting will cost you.
Chose the right time to visit your dentist, rather than
waiting for pain to set in!!!
Baby teeth care is often neglected.
They are temporary and will fall off anyway is the most common mindset.
If you have a child or know someone who does, and shares this mindset, please STOP!!!!!
Do you know milk teeth are essential and important in ways more than one?
Ever wondered why baby tooth care is essential and cannot be underrated?
Sharing a few fun facts to help you gauge better.
Healthy Baby teeth are required to ensure that kids;
π΄ CHEW PROPERLY- Remember your 5th grade science classes? Digestion begins in the mouth. Food when chewed correctly will lead to proper and complete digestion, thus improving nutritional absorption and overall growth.
π΄ SPEECH- Kids below 5 years can learn multiple languages and words. However proper tongue movements are required for articulation of words. Gaps due to missing teeth or grossly decayed teeth can cause deleterious tongue movements and incorrect pronunciations in the early years of life.
π΄ Smile- Smiling is one of the first form of communication babies learn. In case of decayed teeth or malaligned teeth, kids may be teased, often feel shy of smiling, which may affect their socializing.
π΄ Natural space maintainers- Milk teeth hold fort till the permanent teeth are mature enough to erupt in the mouth. in case of early loss of milk teeth, permanent teeth may not have enough space to erupt. They also direct the permanent teeth into their proper position.
π΄ Prevent damage to permanent teeth- In case of trauma, milk teeth often take up maximum impact minimizing damage to permanent teeth. Since milk teeth are in close proximity with the developing permanent teeth, it is essential to know that infection may spread faster. Hence healthy milk teeth also prevent spread of infection.
π΄ Trainer Teeth- One may also see them as trainer teeth, where in the child could be trained to develop and maintain healthy oral habits. What they learn with milk teeth, is what they will continue during their permanent dentition.

MINOR MALOCCLUSIONS can have detrimental effects on function as well as mental and emotional well being of a person.
Dental Crossbite is one such malocclusion where in the upper teeth fit behind the lower teeth when mouth is closed or at rest.
Crossbites can be seen in the front teeth or back teeth, one one side or both and may be dental or skeletal in nature.
Crossbites can occur due to reasons as follows:
-> Over retained milk teeth causing obstruction to erupting permanent teeth
-> Genetics
-> Mouth breathing
-> sucking habits like thumb sucking, finger sucking, or prolonged use of pacifiers
-> Malposed tongue/ incorrect swallow pattern
-> Injury to the jaw
Crossbite can be corrected and should be attended to as soon as it is noticed.
For Baby A, we chose to modify the 2 by 4 appliance in order to minimize the chances of poor oral hygiene while using benefits of a fixed appliance therapy.
Early detection and treatment avoids need for long term or invasive therapies.

DID YOU KNOW???
Brushing harder doesn't mean cleaning better.
For children brushing should be done with a soft bristled toothbrush, in circular motion.
Brushing hard may wear off enamel, the protective hard layer of teeth exposing the relatively softer dentine below it
Dentin is inherently yellow in colour, which eventually starts showing, which parents often mistake as improper or poor brushing.
A visit to your dentist will help clear this.

As parents, you may often deem the cavity to be insignificant, while its creating havoc within.
6 monthly recall visits help catch lesions early and prevent invasive treatment.
Dentists use Radiographs (X-ray) to determine the depth of the cavity and plan the best treatment with the most favorable outcome for your child.

As you start planning your child's first day back to school, keep their dental check ups in mind.
Make DENTAL VISIT part of your back to school line up.
This will help ensure minimal breaks on school days owing to dental pain or emergencies.
This also helps form a pattern and helps children associate summer vacations, or days before the beginning of a new academic year as a time for their fun Dental visits.
Routine dental check-ups help keep decay to a minimal and also allay any fear that may arise in case of emergency visits.

A Pediatric dentist receives 3 years of training to treat infants, children, teens and those with special health care needs.
Children respond to dental visits differently than adults.
A child may be anxious or fearful in unfamiliar surroundings. This anxiety can be severe when the patient requires extensive treatment.
Visiting a pediatric dentist (all of whom receive specialized training to address and modify behaviour) alleviates this anxiety.
Children should see a pediatric dentist every six months for a check up and fluoride application. These visits help reduce the chance of disease by keeping the mouth and teeth healthy throughout life.

Nature works in mysterious ways.
Pearls are formed inside the shell of certain mollusks as a defense mechanism against a potentially threatening irritant such as a parasite inside the shell, or an attack from outside that injures it.
Our body too has various immune responses to wall off invading germs.
Our teeth however are under constant attack by bacteria- good and bad.
Fluoride application helps make your pearlies more resistant against these bacterial attacks.
