Sopore youth’s su***de, rescue operation on to retrieve the body from Jehlum

SOPORE: The rescue operation launched to trace the youth from Sopore who allegedly committed su***de by jumping into river jehlum on Wednesday evening continued by joint teams of police and SDRF.

According to KD Correspondent, the teams of police, SDRF and locals on Thursday morning resumed rescue operation to retrieve the body from river jehlum.

Station house officer Sopore Azim Iqbal told Kashmir Despatch that efforts are on to retrieve the body from the river, he added that a case has already been registered and further investigation has been initiated. He however added that army has also been informed to send navy for this operation.

Pertinently, on Wednesday evening a 12-year-old a class 8th student identified as Shahid Nazir Changal son of Nazir Ahmad Changal of Ahadbab crossing jumped into the river from bypass bridge.

According to sources the boy had some issue with family, left home and then called them and shared his location, then after family reached to the spot he jumped into river jehlum sources added.

Kreeri Encounter Ended Top Lashkar Commander Sajad Mir@ Haider Along With His Two Associates Killed.

The two day long encounter in Kreeri in Baramulla district has finished with forces killing the third militant who had Engaged them in an intense gunfight ,taking the total death toll to eight including two CRPF personal , two army men, one J&K Police SPO and three militants .

SSP Baramulla told that the militant’s dead body has been spotted, adding that the area would be properly sanitized before lifting the cordon .

According to Reports, this is the first time since 2004 that a gunfight had broken out in Kreeri town. The encounter had raged between forces and militants on Monday morning after militants attacked a Naka party at Doolipora- Kreeri junction in the outskirts of the town killing three SFs including two CRPF men and one SPO of J&K Police.
Two militants were later killed in the afternoon in the encounter that followed the attack. Later two army men were also killed in the encounter which lasted more than thirty three hours. The third militant who was killed this afternoon is believed to be a foreigner and named Usman.

Two AK47 Rifles and 3 Pistols alongwith other ammunition have been recovered.

*Protests in Kashmir over civilian death during attack*

Srinagar: Hundreds of people in Indian-administered Kashmir staged protests on Wednesday, accusing government forces of killing a man during a rebel attack which also left a trooper dead.

Rebels opened fire from a mosque attic in the northern town of Sopore, setting off a battle with security forces, paramilitary police spokesperson Junaid Khan told AFP.

The family of Bashir Ahmed Khan alleged that he was dragged out of his car after the showdown and shot dead by paramilitary troopers.

His three-year-old grandson, who was travelling with him, was later pictured sitting on his chest.

"Locals said that he (Khan) was brought out of his car and shot dead by the forces," Farooq Ahmed, a nephew of the dead man told AFP.

"They told us that someone in uniform then put the child on his chest as he lay dead on the road and took photographs," Farooq Ahmed said.

The photo of the child sat on the body of his dead grandfather was widely shared on social media.

Paramilitary spokesman Khan said the allegation was "baseless".

Police also denied the claims, saying legal action would be taken for "false reports and rumours".

"There was no retaliation from the security forces," inspector general of police Vijay Kumar told reporters.

Hundreds assembled at the man's funeral near the main city of Srinagar shouting "We want freedom" from Indian rule.

Government forces have intensified counterinsurgency operations against separatist rebels since a coronavirus lockdown was imposed in March.

Since January, at least 229 people have been killed during over 100 military operations across Indian-administered Kashmir, including 32 civilians, 54 government forces and 143 rebels, according to the Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), a rights group.

Rebels have been fighting Indian rule in the Himalayan region for more than three decades to back demands for independence or a merger with Pakistan -- which also controls part of the disputed region.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and training rebels. Islamabad denies the allegations. (AFP)
