The word panchayat is originated from sanskrit which means self governing committee consisting of five members. These members were honoured as 'Panchparameswara'and the head of them
was termed as' Gramini.' The anicient villagers believed that the panchparemeswara were the five faces of God Parameswara who speaks to them on village governance. These panch parameswara were considered as the five sense organs of the panchayat. The gramini was elevated to the status of brain of the panchayat.
The term pachayat is used though the strength of this body increased from time to time as a mark of respect to this august institution. Mahatmaji rightly thought the 'gramaswaraj' can be achieved only through the revival of this socio -political institution as it is the part of our culture and also the best organisation for the success of democratc decentrlisation.
