Come and say Hi to us tomorrow at UN Lawns, as we curate a photo exhibition to put the spotlight on Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
The photo Exhibition titled "Ability in Disability” aligns with this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities theme, ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities’. The exhibit showcases 21 impactful narratives from the Campaign shedding light on the challenges and triumphs experienced by People with Disabilities across every Indian state and union territory, encompassing all 21 disabilities recognized under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act of 2016.
Emphasizing on the individual rather than the disability, these photos illuminate the struggles and victories of relatively less-known persons with disabilities. Through the compelling portrayal of their daily lives, EGS aims to raise awareness about disability among the broader public, challenge preconceived notions and biases, and foster a more inclusive society that embraces diversity. https://india.un.org/en/254661-ability-disability

Meet Sunita, a resident of Son Garha who now lives with her family in Greater Noida. Her husband works as a sweeper, and to supplement their income, Sunita sells articles on the footpath. Her sole aim is to earn enough money so that her child, Bhola, can go to school and have a better future.

Unfortunately, Sunita's pregnancy was not an easy one. When she gave birth to Bhola with the help of a local 'dai,' she bled profusely, and the child was born malnourished. Due to a lack of access to proper medical care, Sunita was bedridden for several months, and it was a challenging time for both her and her child.

Sunita's story is not an isolated one. Many women in our country do not have access to proper healthcare facilities during pregnancy, leading to and deaths. This is why initiatives like National Safe Motherhood Day are crucial. Every year on 11th April, this day generates awareness about the need for care, medical check-ups, health support, and government initiatives to ensure safe motherhood.

Access to proper healthcare facilities during pregnancy is a basic right that every woman deserves. At We Photo, we aim to highlight the stories of women like Sunita, who have suffered due to a lack of access to proper healthcare.

On this National Safe Motherhood Day, let us come together to support the cause of safe motherhood and work towards ensuring that every woman has access to the healthcare facilities she deserves. 📷

*Autistic people need alone time*
It is popularly believed that autistic people are quiet, non-vocal, and isolated individuals who prefer to withdraw from people rather than engage in a social environment. However the fact is that autistic people need time to react and recover from sensory overload.
People with autism often develop hypersensitivity to sight, taste, touch, smell, and other sensory stimuli, which may affect their present behavior and state of mind.
The best way to support autistic people during this period is to give them time to regulate and recover.
On this year, let us try to understand Autistic people and empathise with them. 📷

Joy is intangible.

Children of migrant workers settled along the banks of Yamuna, splashing around in its waters, oblivious of the deterioration of the Yamuna River. For them, it is a mere pool filled with undiscovered joy and continues to be part of their lives.

The photo by Solanki evokes pure joy.

On that joyful note, we wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Please keep taking wonderful photos and submit them to [email protected].

There's no such thing as a man's job for these women who are breaking stereotypes and working in male-dominated sectors. According to a 2015 study by the McKinsey Global Institute, India could increase its GDP by up to 60% by 2025, if women participated the same as men.

Water — a fundamental human right is a rare commodity for these migrant communities from Rajasthan and Haryana. Legal access to public services such as sanitation and water is denied to them - impacting the quality of life, household economy, social relationships, and health, especially those at-risk such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

Photos left to right:

1) and 2) The search for water led this young man to a leaking pipe in a nearby colony. It took him five trips to and fro to fetch water to take care of drinking and cooking needs for the next few days.

3) A child suffering from bacterial infection. During rains, the children play in the water accumulated on the roads containing f***l matter and dirty water overflowing from the drains.

Enabling storytelling through authentic, honest, culturally sensitive and relevant, and diverse visual narratives — capturing India and its people, as is.

“I took this photograph in a remote village in Bundu block approximately 45 km from Ranchi, Jharkhand. It was during one of those field visits with a team of experts to understand the impact of the government interventions in the Aanganwadi Centres (AWCs)”, tells Niraj Sinha, an award-winning visual storyteller specialising in documentary photography.

Sinha further adds, “This old lady was sitting next to the AWC. Her wrinkled face and deep eyes intrigued me. I wanted to capture that moment, so I started chatting with her in the local language to break the ice. She was sitting against a dull wall and the photographer in me was scouting for the perfect light. I requested her to move to the other side and played around with the reflection of sunlight falling on the wall to softly lit her face. The textured mud wall somehow adds beauty to the portrait of this beautiful woman and her weathered face — a tell- tale of a life lived well.”

This striking image of a mother and her child against the backdrop of a soot-covered wall, mired in hopelessness and poverty, symbolizes the life of roughly 364 million people in India and 1 billion people in the world.

The series on 'inequities that exist' presents a visual narrative of the life of people living below the poverty line in India and how access to health, education, and basic amenities is an everyday struggle for them.

The series documents age-old traditions and rituals still practiced by these indigenous communities — far removed from our present-day technology-enabled way of life.
