Women of Karbala
I wanted to write on this topic for last few days. Imam Husain’s (as) name and his sacrifice is well known to many people but the sacrifices and leadership roles of women of Karbala is still unknown to many despite the fact that had these women not been there, imam husain’s (as) revolution would not have been known to many. It’s the determination and restless efforts of Bi bi Zainab (sa) and Imam Syed-e-Sajjad (as) that people got to know about the sacrifice of Imam Husain (as).Though each bibi of Karbala is important but lady Zainab (sa) played arguably the most pivotal role.
Imam Husain (as) was advised by many not to accompany women in his journey to Karbala, but he was very clear in what he was going to do. Lady Zainab (sa) supported him at every step. She could not leave her brother alone. She also brought her children along, who also laid their lives on Ashura.
Lady Zainab (sa) stood alongside his brother in all the tribulations from enduring the thirst to sacrificing her progeny. While her brother was decapitated, she was watching it standing few yards away.
The night of Ashura called as “Shaam-e-Ghareeban” is the most horrifying night when the bodies of martyrs were decapitated and trampled upon by the hooves of horses. The tents of women and children were looted and burnt. Many children died under the horses’ hooves and the veil of Women were snatched away. In all these atrocities, Lady Zainab (sa) stood tall facing every adversity with courage and leading the disheveled caravan. She rescued the only surviving male member and Husain’s (as) Son Imam Syed-e-Sajjad (as), who was unconscious due to illness, out of the burning tents. Syed-e-Sajjad (as) was targeted by the Yazid’s army on many occasions later on but it was Zainab (sa) who rescued her nephew at every occasion.
The day after Ashura, the oppressed caravan was paraded from one place to another on unsaddled camels , handcuffed from the back of their neck so that they can’t beat their chest (Matam). They were not even allowed to cry or weep over their near and dear ones. Whenever they tried to do so, they were whipped by the Yazid’s soldiers. But God has His own plan, millions are shedding tears and doing Matam on Husain even after the passing of 14 centuries of his martyrdom.
When this caravan was brought in the lanes of Kufa, a place where Zainab (sa) was a princess during her father Ali’s caliphate, as captives. She jiggled the crowd with her assertive speech. She was to go through the court of Governor of Kufa, Ubaidullah ibn-e-Ziyad who tried to disrespect the holy caravan, Lady Zainab (sa) replied valiantly. Everybody was stunned by her knowledgeable and courageous speech. This caravan again paraded through the longest possible route to Damascus. The small group was forced to stand on the main gate of the city for 72 hours just because the city was to be decorated for the celebration on the calamities of Ahl-ul-bait as.
When the little caravan reached Yazid’s court, Yazid was playing with the teeth and lips of Husain’s head while Zainab (sa) along with other women tied in one rope were standing in the mid of the court surrounded by around 700 ambassadors, noblemen and bureaucrats. The sermon that Zainab (sa) delivered at this point shook everyone. She repudiated the claims of Yazid and refused to be humiliated and exposed his hypocrisy. She courageously said, “Oh Yazid! Do whatever is in your capacity but you would never be able to stop people from remembering us”. The daughter of Ali (as) could not be cowed down by anybody even if she was standing in the court of a ferocious beast.
Yazid ordered their imprisonment. Zainab (sa) along with others were incarcerated for almost an year before Yazid ordered their release. Zainab (sa) in between lost her beloved Niece and the daughter of Husain “Sakina” due to the distressful circumstances of the prison. Before leaving Damascus, Zainab (sa) laid the foundation of the Majlis of Husain (as) then and there in the capital of Yazid. She made sure that their belongings including the heads of their martyrs be released and they be allowed to organise mourning session for three days in the city of Damascus. This was the first majlis of Husain (as) held in the forte of Husain’s murderer. The Majlis that she observed is now held in every part of the world and the message of Husain is being repeated every year for 2 months and 8 days.
Zainab (sa) brought Husain’s (as) message everywhere and even died while propagating the message of Husain (as). Had Zainab (sa) not been there, Husain’s (as) mission would have lost in the Yazid’s propaganda of rebel. Even now, many wanted to vindicate Yazid from the heinous crime but the sermons and speeches of Zainab (sa) would not exonerate him and this unfolds the enigma as to why Husain (as) brought Zainab (sa) and other women along with him.
Today is the day of Arbaeen (40 days of the Ashura). Tradition says that when Zainab along with other ladies travelled Madina en route Karbala. They reached Karbala on the day of Arbaeen after an year of incarceration. It is recommended that people should visit the grave of Husain (as) on the day of Arbaeen and hence millions of people thronged to Karbala on the day of Arbaeen every year.
Karbala is the story of Husain (as) and Zainab (sa), While Husain fought valiantly on the day of Ashura and reached his destination victorious, Zainab’s (sa) journey was long and she proved to be victorious and hence the city which was once the capital of the oppressor is now known as the City of Zainab (sa).
