C-02 - Our Home Terrace Garden -

My Wife and I share a combined interest in gardening. Both of us have graduated with Botany subject as specialization and this is where we find the "roots" (Pun intended) of our friendship and the courtship that followed.

The task of beautifying our house with flower plants was one of the first things we planned and executed after marriage.

Both the balcony grills soon lined up with pots of flowering plants. As per tradition, Tulsi plant got the first preference. We started to get first-hand experiences of handling plant pests, nutrition, fertilizer, watering, flowering, etc.

Whenever we switched homes, our pots followed us and have always increased in number.

We transitioned from flowering plants to herbs, vegetables, and fruit plants in the past couple of years. Our recent additions have been vegetables and fruits.

We love to see them grow and harvesting is a delight. After taking inspiration from some online DIY videos, we experimented on growing plants from kitchen leftovers from veggies and fruits.

We have two beautiful Avocado plants, one pineapple plant, one lemon plant, different capsicum and tomato varieties growing from this experiment.

Our love for Italian food gave us the idea of having a herb garden section that would guarantee fresh herbs at our disposal for any instant cravings for pasta, soups, and herbal teas.

To save us time and efforts of germinating herb seeds, we bought some herb plants from local nurseries and from online stores and now we have a beautiful herb reserve. We currently have around 40 different plants in the two balconies combined.

We love spending time and efforts on our plants. We cherish this "WE" time together when we spend time mixing manure for the plants, trimming them, checking them for pests, and the most awaited harvesting phase.

We have a strict "No Flower Plucking" policy in our home that both of us strictly follow. We believe flowers look much better on plants that in flower-pots.

The joy of watching your seeds sprout to life and grow to give out beautiful flowers and fruits cannot be explained.

Walking into your terrace and picking up a ripe strawberry or mulberry from your plant and enjoying it fresh is priceless and worth the time, money, and efforts you put into your garden.

Also, when you see how much effort goes into growing fruits and vegetables, you learn to waste less and respect the farmers for their work.

I hope you enjoy the virtual peek into our garden through these photos.

From the world-famous pav bhaji to the delicious poha, Maharashtra has a lot to offer to food lovers.

Maharashtrian food is truly unique. Wheat, rice, jowar, bajra, lentils and seasonal fruits and vegetables staples. The highlight of this cuisine is the use of peanuts and coconut in most dishes. Maharastrian meals are based Ayurvedic principles. It is believed that your daily meal should be well-balanced which is why a traditional Maharashtrian thali will have Rice, Chapati, Dry Vegetables, Curry, Lentils, Salad, Pickle, Chutney and a Dessert. All the flavours like spicy, savoury, sour, bitter and sweet are packed into one plate.

Since they occupy a vast area with distinct geographical differences and food availability, the Marathi people from different regions have produced a diverse cuisine. The diversity extends to the family level because each family uses its own unique combination of spices and ingredients.

T-03 -Konkan Travel - Murud ( मुरुड ) 28/04/2020

T-07 -Travel Diary - Guhaghar ( गुहाघर ) 26/04/2020

This is one of the cleaner beaches in this belt. The sand is nice and soft and good for building sand castles. It is the longest beach in Konkan. Very clean and clear. Narrow roads to approach the beach but normally it is not that crowded. Since it is far away from Pune and Mumabi you do not have one day travellers crowding it.

Devbaug Sangam - An extension of the Tarkarli beach, Devbaug lies to the south of Tarkarli and extends upto the Devbaug Sangam point. Devbaug was a quaint fishing hamlet blessed with a fine white sand beach however now a major part of the population in Devbaug is involved in the hospitality business in one way or the other. Tsunami island and Devbaug Sangam are the main tourist attractions in Devbaug.

Tsunami Island - An Island that was formed after the Tsunami in 2004 and named after it, Tsunami island is a small piece of land which emerges only during low tides in the Karli backwater. Tsunami island is the hub of water sports in Tarkarli making Devbaug a popular place.

Karli backwaters which run almost parallel to the beach starting from Tarkarli on to the little peninisular of Devbaug is the factor that imparts Devbaug an almost surreal beauty and makes it an unique beach destination in Maharashtra like. The piece of land here is so narrow that some of the properties here have the backwaters on one side and the sea on the other. Boating in the backwater is available at the backwater side of Tarkarli and there are house boats also available in the backwaters. M.T.D.C. has a 'kettuvallom' - kerala style of houseboat whereas private house boats are more like mini cruises with an upper deck and related paraphernalia.

Tarkarli is amongst the very few places in the country where you could indulge in SCUBA diving. M.T.D.C identified the region near Sindhudurg fort abundant with coral reefs as the primary site for snorkeling and SCUBA Diving in Maharashtra. Marine biologist Mr Sarang Kulkarni played an important role in introducing SCUBA diving in Tarkarli. The best season for snorkeling in Tarkarli is November to May.
