The Scottish physician and biologist John Boyd Orr emerged in the inter-war years as one of Britain's leading experts on nutrition. He maintained that many Britons were malnourished because their incomes were too low. Boyd Orr participated in the efforts in the League of Nations to achieve an international policy on nutrition. During the Second World War, he proposed the idea of a "world food plan" to President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the USA. In 1945 he was elected Director-General of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), the first of the specialised organisations established under the United Nations. Food and prosperity for all people on earth led to peace, Boyd Orr argued.

Boyd Orr was an ardent adherent of world organisation as a means of securing peace, and argued for a world government ruling according to rules of international law. The nations of the world were now so dependent on each other that they had to give up some of their sovereignty. Boyd Orr was elevated to the peerage for his national and international commitment.

In 1949 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his lifelong effort to conquer hunger and want, thereby helping to remove a major cause of military conflict and war."

"When I woke up just after dawn on September 28, 1928, I certainly didn't plan to revolutionise all medicine by discovering the world's first antibiotic, or bacteria killer."

Alexander Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering penicillin. He saw that bacteria he had been growing on a culture plate had been killed in an area close to where a mould was accidentally growing. He isolated the mould and showed that it released a substance that inhibited bacterial growth. He named the substance penicillin after the name of the mould.

Fleming reported his ground-breaking results in the scientific paper 'On the antibacterial action of cultures of a Penicillium with special reference to their use in the isolation of B. influenzae', published in British Journal of Experimental Pathology in 1929.

In August 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. At the time of the bombing Sadako Sasaki, a two year old girl, was one kilometre from the centre of the Hiroshima blast. Despite her proximity she survived the immediate effects. However, 10 years later she was diagnosed with leukaemia.

While in hospital Sasaki learnt that, according to Japanese legend, if she folded 1,000 paper cranes she would be granted a wish. She started out folding dozens of cranes each day. When she ran out of paper, she used medicine wrappings and whatever else she could find. But sadly her condition worsened and she died aged 12.

Today origami cranes have become a powerful symbol of a world without nuclear weapons.

In 2017 International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its leadership in working towards a treaty-based prohibition of nuclear weapons: https://bit.ly/3b1MuWT

Today is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 1.25 million deaths occur and 20 - 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries every year globally due to road crashes. Nine countries account for over 60% of global road traffic deaths: Brazil, Cambodia, China, India, Kenya, Mexico, Russian Federation, Turkey and Viet Nam. The five risk factors for these road crashes are speeding, drink &driving, not wearing helmets, not wearing seat belts, distraction and not using child restraints. During these days of globalisation road crashes have emerged as a serious public health problem in the world and also in India. India has only 1 % of world vehicles population but accounts for 10% of world road crashes. In India, road crashes are associated with nearly half a million injuries each year and an average 130 000 deaths (the highest number of road fatalities in the world). Approximately 1,374 crashes and 400 deaths take place every day on Indian roads which…show more content…

One of way to reduce road crash in our country is by reduce speed of the motor vehicles and by reducing speed there will be significant reductions in road traffic crashes in country. According to WHO for every 1km/h reduction in average speed, there is a 2% reduction in the number of crashes. In urban areas, with with high number of pedestrians and cyclists, there is need for reducing speed for the safety of road users.

First of all, Mahatma Gandhi was a notable public figure. His role in social and political reform was instrumental. Above all, he rid the society of these social evils. Hence, many oppressed people felt great relief because of his efforts. Gandhi became a famous international figure because of these efforts. Furthermore, he became the topic of discussion in many international media outlets.

Mahatma Gandhi made significant contributions to environmental sustainability. Most noteworthy, he said that each person should consume according to his needs. The main question that he raised was “How much should a person consume?”. Gandhi certainly put forward this question.

Furthermore, this model of sustainability by Gandhi holds huge relevance in current India. This is because currently, India has a very high population. There has been the promotion of renewable energy and small-scale irrigation systems. This was due to Gandhiji’s campaigns against excessive industrial development.

Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence is probably his most important contribution. This philosophy of non-violence is known as Ahimsa. Most noteworthy, Gandhiji’s aim was to seek independence without violence. He decided to quit the Non-cooperation movement after the Chauri-Chaura incident. This was due to the violence at the Chauri Chaura incident. Consequently, many became upset at this decision. However, Gandhi was relentless in his philosophy of Ahimsa.

Secularism is yet another contribution of Gandhi. His belief was that no religion should have a monopoly on the truth. Mahatma Gandhi certainly encouraged friendship between different religions.
